Over the past week we’ve seen friends, my wife’s coworkers and family members and somehow the number of basses I’ve acquired over the past two years has been the topic of discussion. In various forms this basic question has come up, “why so many, what does one do that others don’t?” I friggin hate that question! Granted these peons are not musicians, but… but… ARRRRRRRRG!

I guess what fry’s my ass is I can’t give a good answer. Does this ever come up or bother you guys? I’ll soon have 4 EBMM basses and I have every intention of buying more, I just like them… SO THERE!!! :D

LMFAO! I get that sh*t all the time from my wife. At this point I only have the one bass, with another coming at the end of November. But, there have been times when I've had four of the little buggers on stands in the "studio".

I don't even bother with a reason anymore...it's just fun! :D

Hey Psycho,

Point out how many pairs of shoes she's bought over the past few years. That will shut them up...

LMFAO, again! I use that in return-fire on my wife...except it's her expensive horse training that I rifle back! Usually does the trick.

heh, well I've got 15 (with one more on the way) of the same shape bass (but different models and colours)

You should hear the dumb questions I get about them ( the most annoying one being " WHY? ", even other bass players have been known to ask me that)

for some reason it's ok to collect china pigs or beanie babies but basses, all of which I can (and do) use at gigs, are not acceptable to collect.

hasn't stopped me yet though ;)

I get the question too, but for me it's an easy answer...

Each of my (soon to be) three basses fills a unique need - and I've had much success convincing my wife and family as well. Heck, even she makes the arguement for me when her dad raises an eyebrow...

Now, next on my list is a LTD fretted something-or-other (Sterling of Bongo - TBD). This will probably come to be for 2007 and it's "unique need" will be to share main gigging duty with my fretted Sterling, so that I always have a back-up bass to go to. Bit tougher to sell, but still a "valid" reason and a confident argument I can make to the suspicious mind.

So for the immediate future I've got it covered. Now, beyond that, I'll need to come up with a new strategy. :p

Ive only got 3 basses (1 of which is extremely playable and two complete shockers which are both obviously not mm)and I get asked that question as well... I tell them (as patronisingly as possible) that when they are a musician they will understand

Word. 9v batteries cost a helluva lot less than a bag of horse feed or a bale of lucerne hay, and a set of flats lasts a helluva lot longer than a set of horseshoes. Plus, you don't have to buy expensive clothes and footwear to play bass.

Been there, done that. When I was married I owned 2 basses and 3 horses. Now I own 18 basses and 0 horses. Do the math.

Don't get me wrong, I love horses and am grateful to my ex for teaching me to ride, but basses are a lot less stressful. When something on a bass breaks you can usually get it fixed without having to throw it away.

When my second SR4 arrived, my wife looked at the two SRs & said, "Wait a minute. Is that one (the new one) the same as that one (the old one)? Why did you get another bass exactly like the one you have, except in a different color?" I just said, "You'd have to be a musician to understand."

Good God! If we actually owned the one horse she rides (she co-leases with the owner), we wouldn't even have this computer (or my Bongo and rig)!

But you know, I enjoy being around the horses down at the stables, and even take them out grazing from time-to-time.

Relaxing for me.

You know you have the right to ask them why so many dresses, why so many shoes, you can only wear one at a time, so what up, lol

18 basses - 2 already had = 16 basses

3 horses had - 0 horses now = 3 horses sold

therefore assume money from 3 horses used to buy 16 basses

average value each horse = 5.33333333 basses

You mean when something on a bass breaks, you don't have to SHOOT IT!!!

As for the comparison to shoes, not really sure basses are fashion accessories, unless worn as a necklace "Jack-style" ;)

I’ve got a couple pair of full quill ostrich boots that were 1200.00 buck each. (Of course I’d never pay that, we had an endorsement deal, but that was on the price tag…)

My wife is a CFO and her suits are the only luxury she affords herself, she says “you can’t walk into a board room full of millionaires and give a presentation in a suit from the Dress Barn.” One section of her closet would easily out pace my entire bass collection. I guess the issue is she makes all the money, my income will buy you a nice lunch…
