This question has probably been answered a million times already, but since I am new to the forum I was wondering why MM makes a different pickguard for the 5 string from the 4 string egg shape? I really prefer the SR4 pickguard shape and chrome plate behind the knobs. Why did they change that for the SR5?

I like the oval/metal control plate too. If one were to get a SR5 with the oval/metal configuration, everyone "in the know" would assume it was a S.U.B. 5--
So you should embrace the "status" of having a swoopy pickguard without the plate on your awesome 5!
It's mostly because the SR5 is based on the silhouette design, which also has the swoopy pickguard and extra contouring...
Was that eggheaded?

Yeah but the SR5 was around long before the SUB.....

I'm curious as to why myself... I know the SR5 is really a Sterling 5 - but even the Sterling has the oval PG...

What's up?

oooh oooh i know
its mostlikly because the sr5 has more electrical cords and such
and because everyone knows that the natural curve of the sr5 PG keeps bridges from breaking
and if your bridge breaks the tension could get off and the string could break off and the volocity would break your hand
and the curve keeps away underpant gnomes (AND THE COMMON FACT THAT ALL UNDERPANT GNOMES LOVE BASSAND DESTROYING THEM AND THE NUMBER 5)

so sr5 players are have the curved pickgaurd as an insurance policy from destruction

and where has bov been

I've been cleaning up and unpacking and playing Mr Mom (wife's out of town on business the last three days, help).

I don't know why the SR5 has that pickguard. I know a lot of people don't much care for them, and I myself would dig having a SR5 with the oval guard and metal control plate, but the pickguard itself has never bothered me.

I wish EB would offer the oval guard/metal plate as an option, but I think as long as we keep buying them up as fast as they can make them, they're unlikely to feel any pressure to change things up.

And yeah, I have another Stingray 5 on the way....couldn't take it. I felt naked without one around the house.

I know, I know - gear whore.

Nice! It's got a cool wood grain.
Reminds me of a SR5 I was about to buy and then 'poof' it's gone!
But it did lead me to the white SR5 that became my 'No. 1.'

Yes, could be that they are different instruments....ahem.

The question arises because the Stingray4 has the oval pickguard, the Sterling has the oval pickguard, even the Bongo has the oval pickguard....and the Stingray 5 has that vast expance of a non-oval pickguard.

Jon, Derek, anyone at the factory - any clue on how that pickguard was approved?

Aright Aright--
What it is see, is that it's a Stingray because of the pickup/preamp combo...
A Sterling because of the selector switch...
But the rest of it is a Silhouette.
The headstock should also be a 3+2 configuration to be a "proper" 'ray.
Am I right, or am I right? :D
