Based on what I've read on this forum, the consensus is that the bridge pickup on the original EVH model sounds hotter than the one on the Axis, and actually DOES sound similar to the Dimarzio Tone Zone.

Now, EBMM has confirmed time and again that the pickups from both guitars are indeed the same. So why the disparity in tone?

Some have said that the difference in sound is due to the slight belly cut, which most laugh off.

But what about the size of the control cavities? The cavity on the Axis seems to be at least 50% bigger than the "tone" knob cavity on the EVH.

I'm thinking that the dispersal of string energy is effected on the Axis due to the bigger control cavity and thus gives it a somewhat softer attack than that of the EVH, giving some the impression that the EVH sounds hotter. Kinda like the difference between a semi-hollow and a les paul- the LP has a more focused, "metal" sound.

What do y'all think?

I have an EVH, a ASS and two Axis guitars. To my ear they all sound a little different. If anything the EVH sounds the thinnest of the whole lot, and the ASS sounds the fattest. It really does come down to each piece of wood being different, plus the neck carve of the EVH is a little different to the Axis and ASS guitars.

One other thing to consider is the EVH guitars bridge pickup is a little closer to the strings than the ASS. I have shimmed my ASS so they both have much the same output.

If you want hotter pups, do like I do and run an EQ pedal directly after the guitar before any amps/pedals, keep the EQ flat, but raise the output level to your taste.

I think guitar is a living thing. I have never found two instruments that sound exactly the same, even among the same model. If you add to that small diferencces... You will have the answer.

Just my opinion!!!
