It is my understanding that the first couple years of the SR5 featured alnico pickups, then ceramic pickups were used, and still are to this day.

Why was this switch made?

Not sure this is the real correct answer, but here is my theory on that Subject, On the alnico version you could not get all 3 positions 100% hum free, Even by adding a dummy coil, alnico's aren't totally Hum free.

On an Ceramic it can be done with a few minor Pre Amp changes, and I believe it's just the nature of the alnico VS Ceramic.

Oh no, I beg to differ. Scotty always had problems giving Kirk enough power. Clearly the first Enterprise was not running on 18 volts.
