It's not an easy task getting an 80's four bolt neck to fit another 80's four bolt neck! Fitting necks can be a very "technical" science to say the least. Many details involved to have it come out successful.
However, if one is skilled at this art, with plugging and re-drilling anything can be accomplished.
ah, intonation!! "....gee, now what?? I didn't expect to have to deal with that too when I pulled the neck. Why did I ever start this in the first place!"
lol,lol,lol
However, let me add, yes, it does work out very well sometimes, but it's the early hands on experience/project guitar things that's very frustrating in relation to the neck replacments.
I just purchased the neck over the weekend - very hard to get one out in the wilds, so I decided to take the chance. Its a four bolt neck built in Mar 1990, while my Ray is a '93 6-bolt model.
I know a good luthier so I think I'll put the job in his hands, thanks for making me aware that its not necessarily a simple job. If his initial assessment is that its a non starter, then I'll sell the neck on before the butchery starts!!! I still have the original fretted neck, so the worst that could happen is that I switch back to the old set up and cut my losses.
I've had my 93 ray from new (I was 17!) and we've been through a lot together, but I find I hardly play it now as my 4HH ray is perfect for my needs. Switching it to a fretless will give it renewed relevance in my stable and hopefully mean that it gets the played.
