i also had the same experience with my bongo... sooo loud acoustically, you can hear the basis of the tone in the instrument, but its so versatile when amped that you wont believe it. ps do try flatwounds once.. perhaps its right up your alley

That's the best looking production Bongo I've seen and I've got some beautiful Bongo's myself, but BlueDawn on a Bongo really takes the cake.
