Help! Wood Soap??? - How to clean the neck

Hi everyone,

I have just a question about the Neck of the EBMM Axis. I bought the EB Wax and Oil set with polish cloth an burnish pad. So I wanted to clean the neck and fretboard but If I use the burnish pad I just can clean it mechanicly (by taking away material).
Is there a better way to clean? Is there any stuff like Wood Soap? I know this stuff to clean Parquet floors and real wood furniture. But I don't wanna use it whithout asking some experts like you.

I don't know if wood soap is the right word to describe what I mean. I coudn't find any threads by search - forgive me if it was discussed before.

Hey Dieter,

The soap that we've discussed here on the forums before is called Murphy's Oil Soap. Not sure if it's available in Europe. I believe a couple of guys in England got it.

The neck including the fretboard can be cleaned using a wood soap. The one I use is "Murphy's Soap Oil" which is difficult to get in the EU and I managed to get some from friends visiting the USA who brought some back for me. Infact a friend is coming back to the UK next week with another bottle

It all depends really on the extent of the grime on the neck/fret board. Sometimes it can get so ingrained that it is impossible to remove all but the top most layer. I use a wet n dry abrasive paper that is used in the automobile industry and I use it dry. This will remove any roughness or uneveness, and I then use the Birchwood casey gun stock oil to get it back to as close as it was to when it left the factory.

It certainly wont harm the neck using the Murphys soap oil and it should make a difference to a dirty neck. I used to use 0000 greade wire wool rather than the wet n dry, but not so much now a days as it does create metal shards. I have also been known to use Lemon oil on the neck and fret board - liberal use will not harm it.

thank you for the reply. But it's not a Problem to get the Murphy's Soap Oil here in Germany. There are any online stores. Price 16 Euros or 22 USD.

Will try this.

There is a also another solution : towel for weeping baby's ass. Yes it works ! If it's good for the delicate skin of a baby ass ... well it's good enough for your guitar !

Well, I have to say, I was wondering if one of us Europeans would come up with a worthy alternative but I didn't expect that, François!

FWIW, I'm on the look out for something with a similar formulation. It's basically just a liquid soap (without ionic- or anionic-surfactants, as far as I can tell). If I find something that I'm willing to put on my beloved guitar, I'll test it and let you all know how it works out.

Baby oil is fantastic for rosewood boards too. I know someone who has used it for 30 years plus - swears by it!!

Well Kev if ya into experimental mode - how about those wipes for getting oil paint and crud off your hands.

Great idea, Kev! Continuing the logic, if I can take paint of a steel bar with an angle-grinder, it must be great for taking dirt off guitars!
