Call me cheap , but I have this bass cab 4x10 , I usually run it with a Peavey Max700 with my basses , but I 'm gonna be playing guitar in this new band so I need a guitar amp now, so I was thinkin' , is a bass cab an option for a guitar amp head ?

I want a FAT tone anyway but with great crunchy distortion when I get in the deal and solos

whould a 4x10 cab smudge the distortion ? cause I know through a bass amp distortion sucks

I have no idea. But I'm going to say no because of the impedance of the cab

Ok, you're cheap :)

You might get away with it, given that it's a 4x10", but a lot could depend on the frequency response of the speaker that are in it. You don't need to be looking for excellent reproduction of high frequencies, as most guitar cabs tend to attenuate them anyway, unlike PA amps.

The impedance (of the cab) should be checked, but it's likely to be ok, just make sure that the amp you buy can match the cab impedance. It's commonly 8 or 16ohm, although it can vary, depending on the speakers and the wiring pattern used.

Like Jimmyb said, as long as the impedance is set correctly itll be ok. I used to play my head through a MArshall bass cab cos it was all I had at the time. I never gigged like that tho. So I dont know how it would cut through in a band situation. But, it was a fat bassy sound. But nothing too extreme. Just deep and big.

I'm not sure you will be happy with the tone, JF. Bass cabinet speakers are designed for lots of cone movement involved in the production of low frequencies, while guitar speakers (I think) are typically much more lightweight and designed for a different task altogether. It'll make noise for sure, but probably won't do justice to nuanced guitar playing.

Hell, give it a shot anyway, though! Let us know.

the fat sound and low frequency might turn at my advantage tho

cause I'm bass player that plays guitar , and I'm putting up a Ska band and I found a dude that plays bass and guitar but wanna stick on the bass , and I can't seem to find any guitar player that like ska anymore , so I was gonna play the guitars , and then I found that guitar player that likes to do rhythm ska , and since on the bass I kept things thight and but was also doing lots of melody ,but would be doing chords times to times to support guitars live, I thought I'd play a hybrid sounding style of guitar and bass on the guitar

so that way I'll have EVERYONE completing eachother , Drum and Bass , Melody bass with my lead bassy guitar , my guitar with the rhythm guitar , and the rhythm guitar rhythm with the drum ( simplistically speakin) so I need a sound that's gonna be fats , but with enough bright and pitchy for lead and soloin' ..

so instead of getting an amp that simulateds 20000 things , I'll get a amp that has the guitar power I want and I figure the bass cab would give the growly low I need to feel as a bass player , tho yeah I'll check the ohms...

plus on the bass I mostly play with 15 inch speakers , which provide a heavy bothom feel I never quite found in the 4x10 , I guess the 4x10 will give me what I need in terms of deeps in the sound

now , I'm a big Ska - Funk - Punk Rock fan ,
Into the Less than Jake, Rancid , Descendents , Red Hot Chili Peper and megadeath stuff I above all love the clean sounding of the Motown eara .... what kind of heads are to be taken in concideration , suggestion with and/or without bass cab

maybe It's good to point out I 'll be using most likely either my EBMM Silohouette guitar ( mapple neck so it has a lots of brights ) Or Les Paul Standard Plus Top Plain( epiphone made , yet sounds great ) , OR a LP Special like guitar upgraded with Gibson P-90

I'm open to all suggestion and whys if you may please ;)

thanks

There shouldn't be anything wrong with the impedence, It should be wired to give either 16 or 8 ohms at a guess which as you know will be fine.

The only way to be sure is to "suck it and see".
I went through a bass players rig with my guitar in a small pub venue and it sounded great. I think (but don't quote me) that Kossoff used to go through a bass 4 x 12 cabinet - I know he used a Leslie cab too!

I think you will be ok with the 4 x 10.

Let us know how you get on.

Back in the day, there weren't separate cabs for guitar or bass. I think WEM used to make just one version of 4 x 12. Works for Mr Gilmour....

Guitarists have used the F3nder Bassman for their guitars. I don't see why it should necessarily be a problem.

Anyone here like Larry Mitchell? He used to use a 4x10 h@rtke bass cab (the one with the aluminum cones) for his guitar rig.
