A genuine mint green Sterling by Music Man Ray34ca. I just restrung it with company flats and plugged it in and - have you guys really played these basses? I mean, not at a music store, but somewhere where you could pay attention and play without the GC din overtaking your eardrums?

Sheeeyit, this is good. I'm going to get the kids to bed in a bit and fire up a martini and then get some real time in on this, but first impressions.....yeah. Good. Quite good.

More later.

I played one last night, and was quite impressed with it. But i'm holding off until Pat introduces the 5-string version hopefully next January.

It sounded great with the Slinkys but those have all those weird ridges on 'em so I went with those funky old flats. (Group III)

Questions to answer:

1. "You're jaded enough to have dinner before opening a bass shaped box?"

Well, I also kind of had to sneak it in, and then the boys had to be fed and watered and then I eventually had to introduce the wife to the concept of another bass. It all worked fine, though. Owen digs it, Jeremy was up to his eyeballs in some *&$#ing PSP game. "Nice color", he said nonchalantly.

2. "Did it come from Knoxville by chance?"

Odd question. Who's in Knoxville?

3. "I think you need to brush up on your Army Field Manual. You're not supposed to torture us like that."

The interrogation field manual was used for propping open doors. I'm not sure anyone I knew ever read it.

4. "i love that color. send it here, your dargie needs a green friend."

No. Get your own.

5. "I'd love to know how you think she compares to the SR SUB."

Diffferent animal. My SUB is in California right now, so I can't line them up and do direct comparison, but this one has the skinny neck profile. I'd just say it compares favorably, very much so, and the advantage is that you can order one of these in mint green.

I'm still getting it dialed in, but it's all thumbs up. The Internet Wisdom Dispensers have a number of things to say about these, generally when compared to instruments costing a thousand dollars more or so. I say this: "Well, DUH."

I can't find anything to complain about. The frets are nice and smooth along the edge of the board, no overhang, nothing sharp, feels good under my hand. I'm liking the old school vintage tint on the neck. I'd forgotten how that felt/looked. Different and not in a bad way at all. I believe it's a 10" radius, Pat? Very close to what I'm used to.

The electronics: I don't know if this is exactly the same 2 band preamp circuit but it definitely reminds me of the very best pre-EB SR4 I ever had. Keep in mind I have the flats on, but WHOA it gets big and beefy and wooly and wide very quickly. This would be a great blues bass, at least the way I have mine set up.

I've been trying it with the tone pots all the way off and it still sounds great.

Bump 'em up and hang on to your hat.

I'm telling you - if you don't have the bucks for an SLO Special, this is your huckleberry. The Sterling neck profile is slick, babies.
