That looks very nice - my earlier post which got scrambled suggested a raspberry sorbet classic from Dallas - so I wasn't that far away!

It will be good to hear your thoughts on this after using it with your band.

Great to hear it gets your approval. I just ordered one last week from Perfect Bass. Only 9.5 LBS, woot. Anyway, now I'm really excited. I can't wait to see what they do next with this line. Hopefully more Rays with classic colors and SLO necks. If so, I'll be buying me another.

One more thing. What is the consensus with pickguards on these things? Will regular EB pickguards fit? Perfect Bass says no, but I'm having a hard time understanding why. I'm assuming the CNC program to drill the holes on these would be the same.

I think the guards are just a little bit different from that of a standard EBMM Stingray. I think I remember reading that. If I had a Stingray guard around, I could check it, but I'm fresh out. Or I can't find one. Either way.

This thing is just insane. (ADouglas, you were talking about old Motown and R&B? Don't try one of these with flats, buddy.)

I play 4-bangers so seldom that I had to readjust for a few days to get my bearings, but - yeah. I am back in the groove. Might have a gig in Austin next month and this is on the "must take" list if that shakes out.

I agree with BP: scary good. I always think about what 'budget' basses were like when I was a kid, and while this is not exactly a starter pack from Walmart, it's very affordable. Man. The crap I played! I'm used to playing some pretty damned nice basses and this one hangs with the herd, to be sure.

I'll get some bovine-approved photos up before too long.

Jack puts his money where his mouth is!...I remember reading one of his posts something to the effect, "the green one is mine"....when these first came out...NICE score...I'm thinking about warming my wife to the idea of the Sterling Ray in that new Burst...pony up...

I played one at GC but it didn't overwhelm me like the Lake Tahoe Blue 2 band Roasted Neck Stingray which I played right before and after it. Man I was pining for that one but they wouldn't deal with me. I will definitely give me another round of playing on the Ray35 and based on the comments in this thread may be dealing off some other equipment very shortly. I'm a 4 stringer at heart but wouldn't mind having around a lower buck 5 if it's really this good.

+ 1 IMO the 2 band really nails this ;) - now imagine if you had the mutes as well - I guess you could add one of those aftermarket mute things though (off topic but I saw a guy on Later with Jools Holland playing a white Sub 5 with a Just a mute last week - sounded and looked killer).

I get terribly confused - take the Bongo to a gig and it also covers this ground really well

Look forward to seeing em. Mint green is a v nice colour.

How do you find the narrower than Stingray/Bongo size neck?

Got mine. It's awesome. Perfect weight at 9.5 lbs. The neck feels like a J bass to me, no surprise here. I'm tuning this bass down a whole step with flats. I'm really hoping they decide to release this in some other snazzy colors like mint green. Nothing against the burst finish, but I'd like to see something else as cool as the mint green. If so, I will be buying another to tune standard. Honestly though, this is such a great bass, I'd probably buy the burst finish if they don't do another color. But I REALLY hope they do.

Just an update some two months later.

Sometimes, especially with mid-priced basses, I have this initial honeymoon period - "Oh, it's NEW! Look, it only has four strings! This is COOL!" - and then I go back to playing my usual USA basses and the poor neglected mid-priced bass goes in the closet and a few months later I think, "I should sell that, I'm not playing it."

I bet a few of you multiple bass guys go through this. And you read those glowing reviews you wrote when you were still in lust and think, "Can I get a mulligan?"

So this one isn't like that. I still have to recalibrate my brain to "just" four strings, but once I get a few minutes in, it's cool and I realize that I really DO love this bass.

Tonight, I put straplocks on. So that's a commitment.

Looks very nice in the pictures, can i just ask how it compares sound and feel wise to the american stingrays as i'm looking at either a second hand ebmm or a new ray34 or ray34ca? As i said though very nice looking bass.

Josh, it doesn't really compare easily to anything. It's a Stingray sized body with a Sterling neck profile. Otherwise, it might compare tone-wise to any good 2 band Stingray or even a pre-EB Stingray (yes, I've owned them all).

This and my red Bongo 5H are my new/old favorite playthings.
