I've never played one, never seen one in fact. What are the necks and pickups like? As compared to the Axis or Petrucci (the only others I've played). I have to admit, the Y2D is the first 'new' guitar in a while that's giving me GAS.

Hmm. relying on my memory from the Open House..

The Y2d neck feels somewhere between a Silhouette and a Petrucci. It's not as thick and round as the Axis and Albert Lee necks. It's not as flat as the Petrucci, but it feels better than the Silhouette to my hands.

The pickups are DiMarzio specialties. They sound really great! Lots of brightness and edge to them. in my opinion. Really a rockin' guitar... which is why I had to order one!

Really??? I've never played one, but I found the original Morse to be more like the Axis neck!
I prefer the Pet and Silo neck.

Foggy,

That's how I'm remembering it.

I love the Petrucci neck (which is why I own one).

I went to the OH determined to play all the models to see which other models would feel good to my hands (so I' d know what to order next).

I was surprised that I liked the Y2d better than the Silhouette neck. Remember, the Y2D neck is based on Morse's well-played 20-year old #1 guitar neck. He probably wore the thing a lot thinner with all that use! ;)

Did you happen to play the regular Morse?
I'm just wondering how different they really are. What does 20 years really do?

fogman,

the important thing to take away from my post is this: I'm a Petrucci player, and the Y2D felt pretty darn good to me, too.

I can't remember much about the original Morse model, probably because I wasn't really considering one (tumeni switches). I was mainly trying to figure out if I liked a Silhouette well enough to buy one. The Y2D surprised me with its feel. Now, it is a lot heavier than the Petrucci, and the lack of contours in the body makes a noticeable difference, but they are two different guitars designed for two different guys.

As for 20 years, well.. Steve Morse wore out 8 sets of frets in that time period, and they're made of metal. So I imagine he had to wear a little profile into the wood of the neck as well!

I'd like to see those colors but the Y2Ds aren't even listed on the MM site ...

What are the differences in specs between the Y2D and regular Morse?

Look here for details about the differences, and a photo of the 'Purple Sunset' finish. (This pic has the final Purple pickup covers, too, which are on the purple sunset and de-purpleburst guitars. I'm not sure what color the pickup covers are on the tobacco burst).

Dan,

Lots of folks who went to the open house took pics of Tokkes (Tom) and Beej playing de-purpleburst Y2D's!

I found one for ya.. from GWDavis' site.

Thanks again, Steve!

Now I remember seeing it. Is that a good representation of what it looks like "in person"? Both DPB and PS look gorgeous!

Dan,

Both are gorgeous finishes, and what you see in the pics is pretty representative. Here's a better DE-Purpleburst shot courtesy of fsmith (Sigmund's couch holding Y2D with Trem in De-Purpleburst)

I love that finish! Much more than the Sunset.
Is there still going to be a third colour? In some of the open house pics I remember seeing a sort of tobacco finish behind the heads of BP and the Boys!
Does anyone know if that's it or just a proto?

Fogman,

the Y2D will be available in three different colors: purple sunset (which is purple on the outside and yellow/orange kindish on the inside), de-purple burst (the one I'm holding in one of the pictures and this color looks like one of the stock blue colors, can't remember which one) and tobacco burst (which is the one hanging on the wall behind Steve's back in the open house roundtable talk). The tobacco color is certainly available as far as I'm concerned, but do correct me if I'm wrong.

Neck of the Y2D: very comparable to the normal Morse, just a tad thinner, but evenly cool. I tried all the different models and the Morse together with Axis and Axis SS feel best to me (Petrucci and AL were equally good, but there are matters of taste for me that make those two a bit less favorable).

Anyway: no matter which EBMM you buy, you can't go wrong. Just don't overdo thinking about the different models because in the end you'll have a hard time deciding which one to buy (but that's something you already found out I guess...).

Cheers, Tom.

Ah! Ya!
That's OK! It's just because it's going to be my first EBMM and my first guitar in over a decade, and really my first Quality Axe ever. I know my previous guitars won't even come close. At least I know that my second EBMM will be a quicker, easier choice!! :D
