I saw this model advertized in Musician's Friend when the Y2D forst came out. I've seen several pics of Steve Morse playing that model. Is it a regular production model?

This one...

prototype?

edit: not only the PUP-colour is different - it has also the 2way toggle switch to add the bridge bucker to every position (to be seen in the ad-pic below, on Steve´s guitar it has been removed and the hole is closed with some black plastic thing)

To be honest: I like the cream PUPs much more than the purple ones on this model now

It seems that there are different guitars with Cream-PUPs. The one on your pic does NOT have the 2way-toggle, but on the following pic has it:

If I remember correctly, this is an early version, before it went on sale.
The toggle was removed, that's the plug in the live pic. Steve must've liked the purple over the cream.
MF must've used early pics and never updated it.

This was never a production model and it was never discontinued as well, since it dont exist other than the only one owned by the man himself. Yup. I love the cream pups configuration so much that when I bought my Y2D, I purchased another set of Dimarzio Steve Morse set in creme for future swopping. One year later now, I did not swop it - as I think the tone won me over ultimately. And I also do not want to meddle with the original wiring (think resale).

Look at the tuner buttons, they are different too ;)...

there were a few made pre-production. one made it to a photo session for musisian's friend or someone....& thats how the creme ads came to exist.
steve uses one w/ purple alot ........but it's due to that particular guitars tone.......not because of the creme bobbins. cosmetics is not a major concern to steve when it comes to his stage guitars.

also......if your planning to swap the purple ones out for creme.....you may wanna make sure the single coil can be swithed easily. there may be issues w/ the base plate.
i like the purple much better myself. i also think the binding would look really cool if it was black to match the back & sides...........but that matters zilch !!!!!
:)
