Hi MM nutters, I have a lovely Axis SS that has a recessed neck mounting plate, is this a feature that was particular to early models does anyone know ? Mine is February 2000 manufacture.

Yeah- the neck plates were recessed for a period of time. As the story goes ... a number of people saw finish cracks around the plates when they over-tightened the neck screws, so the design was changed.

Interesting, for me I like the recess design, however the gauge of the neck plate material is not an issue in terms of being evasive in anyway I just think it is a more finished design.

No sign of any cracks on mine either

thank you

I think it was a cool detail, but I totally understand why it was discontinued. I believe that it was in early 2000 that it was discontinued as my Green Axis was made in March of 2000 and it doesn't have it. I had an AL from Jan 2000 and it was recessed.
