Rust. Or so i think...
The top coil on my SR's pickup has become black on the edge (actually- almost half of it). Is it rust? can it be removed without going to a proffesional?
I know rust isn't such a big deal (if my problem really is rust), but it still bothers me, and i wouldn't want to have it spreading and damaging the sound somehow (I recently have figured how to get this sound that iv'e been trying to reach to for a long time, and i really appreciate the SR more than ever now. It would be very frustrating for me if anything would damage it...)
Thanks

It could be rust. I am guessing you are talking about the pole pieces. Scotch -Brite pads work well, but DO NOT use anything like a Dremel tool, sandpaper, steel wool etc.
After you clean it up, the best way to prevent the spread of rust is to wipe the bass down after you play. Sweat is your instrument's enemy!

Yeah, i'm talking about the pole pieces
Will regular rough Scotch-Brite pads be enough, or a smoother type?
I'll try that, and if it doesn't work i sure will post a picture
Thanks for the help!

Our esteemed Bovine Host recommends a pencil eraser for removing rust on polepieces. I haven't tried it, but he's older than me, so I believe him.

For now, the Scotch-Brite pads worked great!
