i was recently reading the special edition rock bass bass player. in this excelent magazine they had all the artist explain how they use their right and left hands. so i will explain my technique and so on to get this great thread on the smash it with a bat

well in my right hand i use for frets 1to 7 i use my 3rd and 4th finger as one. i also seem to pull off a little when i am letting the string go unless playing sticato

in my left hand i usually play a combonation of double slap slap bass. i will take a big swing down on the string then twang up like double double slap style so it is more of a swing style. this is awsome for playin psychobilly.

my sterling is the ****

not old at all

dude, I'm 21 and that made very little sence to me as well...

slap is very cool, but I personally prefure the tone that can only come from playing with a pick (ok I know, I'm a terible person)

besides whats the point of having a bass with a hot pick gaurd without using a pick??

i didnt understand any of it either ... well here's some random babble about my technique

my right hand ....
i use a pick most of the time and i beat my bass into submission. i ened up playing a bunch of power chords and ortave chords too. but thats cuz i was in a 3 peice punk band and needed to fill in some gaps ...

when play w/ my fingers i play mellow but try and get a nice fat sound ... (hope that made sense). i use 2 fingers for picking about 60% of the time and 3 fingers 40% of the time.

as far as slap goes ... i double slap a lot and pop like a mad man using either my index finger's knuckle or my index or middle finger (whichever isnt busy). ive found that you can slap and pop octaves way fast if you use your knuckle for popping. i also swap between pointging my thumb up or down depending on what my right hand has to do next ...

my fretting hand is "normal" i guess ... nothing special to say about that

Dude, if you're 21, you really should know how to spell sense and prefer. :p I'll put terible down to typing....

I use my index & ring finger on my RH to pluck and my left to fret the notes. Pick playing has nice sharp tone, but it's not for me. I can pluck almost as fast.

To vary my tone, I'll vary my RH position between the bottom end of the fretborad to behind the pickup.

I have the fingers on my right hand, which I use to pluck the strings.

Then I use the fingers on my left hand to fret the notes.

This is my technique.

first I address the instrument....and ask it for guidance, both on a spiritual and physical level. I express whatever monetary and psychological concerns that might be giving me grief and tell it some lighthearted anecdotes that might illustrate my insignificance in the big picture and yet demonstrate the role I might play in the lives of others.
Then I ask for forgiveness , for the muffled notes, the wavering tempos, the impure thoughts, the neglecting to tip the waitress at the end of the night, the
cheezy stage moves, and my conviction that the bass must be the most prominent instrument in the mix.
I set the instrument on it's stand and meditate....I go to a place where the amp is always bigger and the tone is all enveloping, where the audience is appreciative, the waitress warm and attentive, and my bandmates understanding of the importance of the bass in the overall mix.
I do some stretches, knee bends, practice jumps, deep breathing exercises and let out a series of screams to warm up my vocal chords.
Now it's the time to hit the bathroom and do the mirror check.Make sure the hair is just right and get a couple of poses down.Work out that playing face and do a few more screams to warm up the vocal chords.
After that I'm just about ready to do it.

I use standard technique- 2 fingers on right hand... all 4 fingers on left for the most part. Depending on the sound I'm looking for.. I might use thumb muting or a pick. I also use a flamenco style quite often. As far as slapping I use a variety of techniques.- double thumbing, my flamenco technique...etc. If the mood strikes me I use tapping or do the spider crawl(using all 4 fingers on the right hand) that entwhistle is famous for. Whatever the song calls for... I do it.

Right hand: 1st and 2nd fingers do the playing normally. slap i use 2nd finger to pop G string, 1st fingr to pop D string, and thumb to thump away at EA and sometimes D.

Left hand: economy of motion crazyness. i dont use my 3rd finger musch though.
