Off Topic Setup for home...

I was wondering if any of you would discuss your home setups. Especially anyone with an Axe FX II or similar equipment. I'm wondering if I should use monitor speakers like Yamaha HS-8, or a pair of 12" powered speakers. Either would give me stereo sound. I'm worried that HS-8 won't have the low end that a pair of 12" powered speakers would have. I am not in a band, so this is a home setup only. Signal will originate from my Music Man JP-6 in Sky Blue off course.

Very pleased soundwise with these monitors and they allow me to connect both my PC and my ax8 without any mixing device!

My best buddy runs his Axe Fx II into his Yamaha HS-8 and his sounds are stellar.
He NEVER, EVER connects his matrix speakers at home!

I'm a member of the Axe/FX II crowd...

Frequency response on those Yamahas are listed as 38Hz to 30kHz (see here: HS8 - HS Series - Studio Monitors - Music Production Tools - Products - Yamaha United States) - so they should reach low enough for you.

Two things to consider:
1) I'll bet those monitors have lower THD than any powered speakers. You want high fidelity? Go for the monitors.
2) You can get powered speakers at much higher wattage. You want pants-leg-flapping-power? Go for the powered speakers.

my thanks to you both for responding. I have the Axe FX II and obviously am uncertain which way to go. Sounds like the Yamaha's are favored so far. I just want to be able to get/hear a great guitar sound and not have to blow the roof off to get it. Would love to still hear from other members on what the play there Balls through at home.

I often record with a mic'd amp in the next room, with the mics coming into my interface and then out to HS-8 monitors. They work very well for me in that setup.

I used to plug my bogner into a torpedo reload ( it's a attenuator ) I previously used their VB-101 wich is great.
As my amp has a great master volume I don't use anything else anymore.
I can't play amp simulators anymore...my amp sounds too good at any volume levels !

Axe Fx II with a pair of CLR actives. overkill for my condo but I wouldn't trade it for anything. sweet sweet ear candy at low volumes and loud if I ever need to. I've heard good things about the yamaha's and Adams ax7's seem to be popular for that catergory of monitor. Friedman ASM's or Matrix offers a few options as well if you're looking larger...and of course the Atomics.

I had an AX8 which I played through an alto ts110 for a while. I recommend the ts110 if you're looking for a cheap FRFR type speaker. I also had an ev 112xp (i think is the model name), which sounded great. In the end the modeling felt a bit 'distant' for lack of a better term so I went back to amps. I do also play through my pc and headphones using amp sim software which actually has a very decent sound and feel.

My turn! I run my AxeFX II XL+ through an old pair of Behringer Truth 2031 powered speakers and am very happy with the sound. My set-up (divorced dad pad) has my 55" TV in the middle with my CD, DVD and tape players and home stereo speakers and the Behringers on stands to the far left and right. This allows me to play along with YouTube live concerts/DVDs and tapes (I'm old) at my leisure. I connect my PC to the AxeFX and it sits on the coffee table between me and the wall of sound.

Fbecir: I also have a Yamaha TR-10X and a Roland Cube30 for jamming with others wherever I want (the little Yamaha is amazing for its size) and of course a Marshall stack because everyone should have one.
