Hi all !

I'm Franck, newbie from France.

I've just purchase an older Stingray, from 1994, it was a choice. I really like early 90's Stingrays.

The finished (confirmed with serial number) is Trans White maple. And it seems to be rare... i can't really find another one.
But when i received it, this bass was painted in yellow (awfull), directly on the older finition. I washed it totally with acetone, and I was very surprised that it was not sanded !!! A good luck for me. The original finition appears me.

Can someone told me about this ?

Best regards,

Nice (y)

Trans White was offered from the late 1980s to the early 1990s. I used to have a May 1994 model with a Rosewood fret board. I think it started out as a "Special" finish before being advertised as "Translucent White" in the 1990 catalogue. It seems to be relatively rare as I've only seen a few over the years. 1994 would have been the last year before It was offered again in 1913 for the Classic series Sabre Basses. Some refer to the finish as "Mary Kaye" White after a guitarist from 1950s-60s who played a Fender with a similar finish.

Thanks danny-79.

One guy claims here that only 30 Mary Kaye were made, and only 5 2 bands (like mine)... if he's right, it's crazy.
I'm very lucky.

Just curious: how did you decide to wash it with acetone? Weren't you afraid to remove the original finish, too?

When i remove the stickers, i noticed that the paint was not holding.
And that Yellow was directly painted on the originial finition. And it was a bad work, very bad...
But, for my own luck, i could easaly wash the yellow.
I tried Acetone in a little coin of the bass, and it works very well. Acetone is not agressive for polyurethan and polyester varnishes. A forumer in French bass forum "Onlybass" told me this.

It was my luck day !

Refinish was probably spray paint! So I’d imagine it just came off pretty easy

It’s a great looking bass you have, hang onto it, play it and enjoy it
