I pulled out my "old #1" this weekend as well. It's a 62 Reissue Jazz, it was fun to fool arould with, but when I brought out my Bongo, there was no comparison. The only other bass besides my Bongo I miss is a SR 4 that I sent to a gear whore in Georgia.

I have an on-going e-bay search for a 'Royce SG Bass' - this is the bass I learned to play on some 30 years ago. Hoping to find one simply for nostalgic purposes and wall art, not to play. :p

Prior to finding my EBMM Sterling, I played an Ibanez that I had absolutely no love for - I didn't hate it mind you, it played well enough, but there was no intimate connection with the instrument... I immediately let it go, moved on, end of story... :)

My MMs are all great instruments, and are the best built and sounding basses in my herd. There's no question at all about that, but I do own a few other basses that I play regularly because they sound good, are fun to play, have a good vibe, or suit particular gig scenarios.

And a big +1 for what Pete said further up the page .....

If I liked a bass enough to buy it in the first place, it is a good instrument.

although I'd modify that comment slightly ...... If I liked a bass enough to buy it in the first place AND STILL HAVE IT, it is a good instrument.

I do my personal practice on my old bass... because then when I switch to the sterling for jams/gigs everything just seems so damned easy and sounds better by a 100 fold. Would never gig with anything other than the sterling though.. unless of course I bought something equally as good :)

My first bass that I learned a lot on is an early 70's Gibson Grabber that I still have. It's in pretty decent shape. I don't pull it out much because it needs an input jack & I'm lazy. :D
The J-bass that I mentioned in my initial post was the main bass when I finally started gigging & had success in doing so (all previous bands either didn't play out OR 1 gig & the band broke up)...so I will keep this particular bass as well.

Cool - and +1 on the Grabber history... Was my first "pro-level" bass back in the eighties (didn't hurt that I was leading a Kiss-a-mainia band at the time either!).

To be honest with you......here's the story on that:
In '87 I was a drummer in a 3 piece band. We were just young kids starting out. Me and the guitarist wound up having a falling out w/ the bass player. After being unable to replace him, I got a bass for Christmas. I went to the store which was sorta like a pawnshop deal & got the Grabber because it was a "Gibson" & it was cheap...$175. It was an attempt to loan it to someone & teach them to play bass. Well after about a year or so of it changing hands a few times & no one having the knack of learning how to play it, I got it back. I wound up dickering with it & in '89 we made amends w/ the bass player & he was back. Skip forward to 1991. I wound up hanging out w/ a fellow drummer who was much better than me & started jamming on the bass more. Soon after I ditched the drums & went to bass ever since....& never looked back. The irony is I was always a big Kiss & Gene Simmons fan since the 70's. I never realized until I got really into the bass that the Grabber was the bass Gene played in '74 - '75 & was pictured on the Alive cover.....it was kind of ironic.

before I got my Bongo, my main and only bass was a crappy korean thing. I still maintain it in conditions of use, and sometimes practice on it when playing with headphones (it's passive, so I think the risk of damaging the headphone is lower than with the bongos 18 V preamp). But i don't use it anymore when playing with other musicians, and don't even take it as a back up.

i don't think i'll ever play a non MM bass ever again.
as for the warwicks, well my garden shed was in need of patching up & all that lovely warwick natural finish timber means i now have the poshest garden shed in my street:eek:

When we started playing more regularly about 5 years ago, I started getting into buying/selling trading basses. I kept gravitating to Fender Jazz basses, but could never find one that suited me sound-wise. I kept coming back to my Sabre. After trading a Jazz basss for a Stingray, I finally had an awakening that the MM sound was the only sound that really mattered to me and fit in our band's sound.

Thus, the DD coming in a few months. I have messed around in other brands and picked up a Spector 5 to get me through until the DD arrives, but that'll go on the auction block as soon as the DD gets here. I also just picked up a Glaub to see what all the hype is about.

But I always come back to MM.
