Serial number is X13176.

The price was right and I couldn't help myself. I played a passive version of this one awhile back and really digged it. The thing sold within a few days and I felt robbed. So when this one popped up at a local sale, I jumped.

Any advice on learning to play fretless? :D

Practice practice practice.

The great thing is, once you really know how far your fingers can stretch, you can intonate your fretless to match your reach. A friend of mine has been playing fretless for years and he stopped using fretmarkers for guidelines long ago. Instead of trying to reach the fretmarkers, he made the fretmarkers come to him.

That SUB looks great. I really love the headstock with the white logo.

The TU-2 is really making me look bad. I can see how this bass will help my ears. :D

Nice bass. If I ever bought a S.U.B., that would have been the combination. It's too bad they've been discontinued. The black on black is a good look for a S.U.B., and that five-string fretless would be impossibly fun for me to play.

As for the fretlessness, it's easy for me since I have long fingers. I guess it's best just to practice it a ton. In any case, great bass. Have fun with it.

I've been informed that cello players often mark frets with special masking tape. I might go have a look for that stuff.

Noodling in the music store the other day, and I found I was impressed with at least one non-MusicMan innovation. Specifically the way Godin marks their unlined fretless. They use fretlines, but just on the top of the fretboard, where the sidemarkers are. So it sort of looks like a lined fretboard looking down on the bass, but not from the point of view of someone looking at you. A blank plank without being blank. Sort of.

Dude,
That bass is CRYING for an ebony fingerboard.

Just play it like a regular bass and try not to look at the missing frets. Play by ear, at first, just play along with your fave songs to develop a feel sans speedbumps... bring it to practice and play a few songs with it. As time goes on you can slowly develop a vibrato technique, not to worry about right off the bat.
