Right - for the second time in as many days I'm gonna turn to this forum as the font of all knowledge so I hope you're all ready!

I will be graced with the presence of our fair Tiffles tomorrow and we need help:

USAers: What sites and places would you guys like to see if you came to the UK?

UKers: What places have you taken tourists to in the past and think she'd enjoy?

We are, of course scheduling a trip to London, but there's a helluva lot to see in one day - so any unmissables? You sort of take it all for granted, living here - so I know I'm bound to miss out some really obvious/fantastic things if left all to me!

Your thoughts please! :D

I really enjoyed spending a day in Bath when I visited the UK. The baths, the town, all were very nice.
Of course all the usaual stuff in London, the British Museum, the victoria and albert, and the seafood display at Harrahs

Azzy, I have a friend in Knutsworth, he has what is, by all accounts, a mighty fine pub and Thai restaurant. I have no idea where Knutsworth IS, of course - do you?

By the way, just dropped Tiffs off at the airport. Jeremy said he was going with her and meant it, too, until she mentioned all she had was womens clothing and that put him off a bit.

He was sad when she hugged him goodbye. We were pulling away from the curb and I said, "She's really nice, isn't she?"

He said, "I love her."

He's a good judge of character, too.

Good luck in the UK, Tiffs. Come back to Texas anytime.

Bath is indeed cool. Don't bother trying a glass of the mineral water...it's wretched.

What qualifies as "don't miss" kind of depends on the individual. I'm interested in culture, museums and the landscape...in London, the British Museum is a must-see, the V&A, the Tower, Westminster, Buckingham Palace and the changing of the guard, etc. But young Ms. Tiffles might find that sort of thing tedious.

Hopping on one of the tourist buses may be worth the time, just to see some of the city. The London Underground is nifty. Nicer than New York.

My basic rule is to avoid anything that I can see or experience at home. Which means anything that smacks of a global brand is not worth the time (Virgin megastore, any chain restaurant, etc.). Shopping in general is a waste of time unless it's for something that can't be had at home.

The first time I went to the UK we took a drive out to the Cotswolds. Lovely landscape, and an easy day trip from London. On another visit we overnighted in Cambridge, which was fun...college towns are always great. There was a big market set up in a square while we were there.

Actually, the little villages are completely unlike anything we have here in the US, and just visiting an ordinary town is entertaining if you've never seen anything like it. Our oldest towns are only a couple of hundred years old, and America is all about constant change and renewal. Going to an English village where many if not most of the buildings are centuries old is something we just don't get here. Since Australia is also a young country, Tiffles might feel the same way.

A really good pub is not to be missed. Don't know if they have pubs per se down under, but here in the US they really don't exist. Even establishments that bill themselves as such generally aren't anything like a real English pub.

I would just go hang with dlloyd and suck up all the fine whiskys and cigars that he was willing to share with me.

Of course, I would make my opinions on these available to him for his magazine. :D

tower of london -that would be awesome.. very touristy but so much history.

I believe it is also mandatory that all aussies eat bucket loads of curry whilst in london - so pursue that avenue. My friend actually came across curry flavoured condoms in a vending machine once while visiting london... so if you can find those it would be a very amusing.

But most of all if I was in England I would want to see an Ashes Test (cricket Australia V England)... but given that the english side is here now... I am sure that it is not on the books.
