I had the opportunity to play a StingRay bass for the first time last night, & I was really impressed. I havn't been playing bass very long, maybe 2 to 3 months. As some of us have a mid-life crisis & buy a sports car, I decided to learn to play a musical instrument, finally. The Ray I had a chance to play was a 4 string with 1 pick-up, maple neck. I don't know what color it is, kinda like a cherry sunburst, but with a bit of a brown/tan tint to it, with a metal-flake ?basecoat?.

It played really nice, sounded great. I am currently using one of those Squier beginner packs, cheap amp, cheap bass etc etc. I have the opportunity to buy this instrument at what I can see is a decent price, but I don't see a color even remotely like it on the MusicMan website. I suppose color doesn't really matter all that much, since it seems to play & sound very good, but I don't want to buy something that might not be easy to sell in the future should I decide to upgrade to another instrument.

Any input from the members of this forum about what might be a good amp to go along with this bass & any other helpful hints appreciated. I've played quite a few Fenders & a few other brands at Guitar Center, but this by far seems to be the nicest bass I've played to date. The person selling it is someone I work with is only getting rid of it because he has the hots for a Sadowsky, but can't afford one, unless he sells a few other instruments he has.

Thanks,
Vern

Welcome Vern.

Get that Ray if you can. Such great basses. Try an EBMM bass through some MarkBass amp gear. Its heaven.

Is this the color youre talking about? If so, its called Autumn Redburst. GREAT finish.

Welcome to the Addiction!

The StingRay is a wonderful bass....once you get it, there is no point in trying to "upgrade" later....this is a top of the line bass at a working man's price. EBMM basses/guitars sound and play just as great as any boo-teak bass/guitar out there....just without the Ferrari price tag.

I use a GK amp. Great amps....I have been reading alot about MarkBass amp but have not tried one.

Good luck!

YESSSSS, that's the exact color. OMW to work now, will tell the dude I'll take it, thanks for the info about it being a Ferrari at a Chevy price tag. It currently has round strings, think the first thing I'll do is put a set of flats on it. Been looking at a Mesa Walk-About-Scout at GC, might grab it as I can check it out at home & if not satisified, return it no questions asked. It's kinda hard to relly tell what something's like in GC when 20 peeps are cranking amps & the like.

I already like you. Flats on a StingRay is an incredible thing.:D

Just so you know, that Autumn Redburst finish has been discontiued, along with all the sparkles. They still pop up pretty often, but they will get harder and harder to find. So consider it an investment. A very good playing and sounding investment.

Travis is correct on all counts. I always liked the Autumn Redburst finish. Maybe the 2008/9 5th Anniversary Bongo? :D

Welcome, Wraith! Sweet bass you're getting! You'll love it. A Stingray will sound wonderful in just about any decent bass amp. I love GK myself, and a lot of folks here are fans of the new Markbass amps.

We need photos once you get your bass! :D

Travis wears a hat that insures zero possibility of ever getting a girlfriend

Oh BP, that hat isnt so bad. Its just so broken in and comfy. Ive tried to move on to other hats, but they just dont fit like that good old UGA Bulldogs hat.

And I do have a girlfriend, thank you very much.:D

First you decide on a StingRay, then a Mesa Walkabout, and still you want advice? I think you make a good choice trying the Mesa, but beware as there are a lot of amps in that price range that are really good.
