Mesa Boogie convert!

I recently bought a Stiletto Ace 112 Combo and it is one of the most musical amps I've ever played...the clean channel shimmers and the gain channel barks and bites like no other Mesa I've played; the harmonics are fantastic and it feeds back in pitch at ear-friendly levels - it is a revelation.

I liked the clean channel so much that I decided to swap my Cornford Mk 50 for the Lone Star Classic 112 and the clean channel is even better - it's like a Glass Moon (or something). So I can now run both together for a wet/dry set up...I still have the goosebumps.

In fact, both amps are so good I've cleared my pedalboard so that all I'm left with is a Fulltone Clyde wah, TTE in the Lonestar loop, and Choralflange.

I've spent quite some time trying to find that sound in my head and I think I have.

How is the Lonestar's distortion channel? Can it sound a little bit more chunkier and hard rocking?

Appraintly they weight a ton though (The combos).

If l was ever to buy a Mesa again, l'd probably buy the Stiletto, but replacing the caa 3+ with a mesa is just stupid though.

In the latest Guitar World (January 07) one of the feature lessons is John Petrucci playing through what appears to be a Stiletto Ace. If anyone can verify that, I'd appreciate it.

His tone was incredible in that lesson. I was expecting to see his RoadKing. From what I could see it looked like the Ace, but sounded like a 6L6 amp.

Yea man, I found some JP settings and they sound awesome, a good starting point............the thing I'm most impressed with is I can use the output as a secondary master and keep the volumes house friendly but they still sound great. Their CS is excellent too..........reminds me of another company's CS Ive grown very fond of.....

The combos do weigh a ton but they do give you casters (thankfully). I can't afford a roadie and my wife doesn't want the job...

I didn't realise JP was playing a Stiletto Ace on the Glass Moon tutorial in Guitar World - it was an awesome lesson and sounded good too.

JP also uses the Lonestar (I think) for his clean sounds. On the forum, the picture of his current recording equipment (the one with the F-1 picture) includes a short Lonestar head I think.

Robelinda - yes the Lonestar does a really chunky warm distortion on the drive channel, especially if you set it to 50w and use the Tweed/Variac setting. It sounds great with the cut of the Stiletto when they are both on together. Check it out!

As I said, I still like the Cornfords - it was just in comparison with the Mesa A/B'ing, it suddenly didn't sound as good with the JP6s - it seemed woolly in comparison.

Anyway, it's all down to personal taste and we all go with what we like.

I used to be a big Mesa/Boogie guy. I played a tone of them, ranging from the Heartbreaker to the Maverick to the roadster... I took out a Triple Rectifier on loan from my local music store... it's going for dirt cheap because it is used (less that half of brand new...), but I just can't get into it. The Dr. Z slays all competition, and I don't see myself ever going back to Mesa. Mind you, I play blues and jazz. For the rock and the roll, Mesa is a pretty rockin' company.

I just love Z + EBMM. They're magical.

Mesa Rocks! I have a Mesa F-100 2x12 combo and a Tremoverb head. I love them both:
