Help! Fingerboard scarring!

Hi dooooods!

I have a bit of a problem... having had my Bongo for less than a week i've noticed that being a clumsy spazjockey that ive marked the fingerboard in between 2 and 3 from the nut.

I think its when i get a serious beefy jam-on and my technique suffers to be honest... its the marking from roundwound strings and i couldn't sleep last night thinking about it!!!! argh!!!

anyone got any advice? or is it just my awful technique? i can't play gentle! must destroy world with funk/punk!!

My advice wound be to change to Flats.

will i get the same piercing sound with flats? only bass ive played with flats on was a G*bs*n Grabber and not only was it like playing a dining table made out of MDF but my style didn't suit the strings.. is this a bad example of using flats?

Odd.

The only time I've had the fret board (on a fretted bass) marked by strings is when I've balanced it against an amp and it's slipped. Are you sure it's been marked by your playing?

Or, just forget about it. Your fret board will get grooves, but that shouldn't affect playability at all.

i guess ive just got to accept i can't keep it looking perfect and use it as a working bass, if i wanted a museum piece i would have bought one!


i do think its my grip as embarassing as it is!!! like wringing the funk outta some milky teats!

it wont affect anything then? sound? playability?

its making indents into the wood (although only small now)

I just dont want to balls the neck up, i take it its nothing near as bad as actual fret-wear???

i'm rehearsing tonight for 3 hours too... i'm just having a great big girlie panic!!

If you are using stainless steel strings, try switching to nickels. It takes a lot of time to wear down frets...

thanks for your advices guys, i think a set of flats and some nickel's will be worth a try here... this is the first bass i'm not actually intent on destroying

I've got 2 or 3 basses that have some small grooves on the fingerboards from roundrounds, most likely caused by the seller failing to put anything between the strings and the fingerboard before shipping.
