In addition to the tru-oil & gunstock wax, you use lemon oil?

personally, I have never actually used the steel wool. Just fine sandpaper. I haven't tried lemon oil on anything but the fretboard of my JP. Oil and wax on the back of the neck.

I just ordered some real lemon oil, and the gun oil/wax.

I got the impression that the lemon oil should be used first to clean the neck/fretboard thoroughly, then the oil followed by wax. With the drying and buffing and such inbetween. What say you?

Without seeing it it's hard to tell, but you might try to rub the area with a little 0000 steel wool and then use the Birchwood Casey Gunstock wax... I do this as regular maintanence, and it works like a charm! Good luck, and say hi to the CS people at Musicman.

I personally wouldn’t mix products. Quite sure I recall reading on the EB site that lemon oil is fine to use to seal neck wood. Nothing wrong with BC oil/wax, in fact it may be better than lemon oil. I just happen to have lemon oil on hand for my rosewood board, so I use it to clean and seal my maple neck and board too. But I don’t let it set on the maple as I would on the rosewood, I just use a little on a cloth to clean it. If I don’t let it dry and buff it out, it’s a bit sticky. Otherwise, seems to work like a charm.

I'm sure most here have already seen these FAQs from the EB site, but for those who haven't:

Q: How do I clean and maintain my Music Man neck?
A: To clean the neck, use a high-grade of lemon oil. If the neck is very dirty, try Murphy's Oil Soap diluted 3:1. Some players have found that using a toothbrush for cleaning is very effective.

Since the neck is unfinished, it is more susceptible to humidity changes. A very infrequent dose of gunstock oil will help to keep the neck maintained; we recommend Birchwood-Casey Tru-Oil, but any good quality gunstock oil will work. Use a small amount, leave it on for 5 minutes, then wipe it off with a paper towel. After that, apply Birchwood-Casey Gunstock Wax. Be sure to douse the paper towel with water before disposing of it! Read the wax and oil manufacturer's instructions regarding disposal of these used paper towels.

Birchwood-Casey products are available at most sporting goods or gun stores. Their web address is http://www.birchwoodcasey.com.

Rosewood fingerboards should not be treated with the gunstock oil; instead they should be treated with a high grade of lemon oil. Again, for cleaning, try using the same high grade of lemon oil to clean the entire neck, both maple and rosewood fretboards. If the neck is very dirty, you can use a small amount of Murphy's Oil Soap, diluted 3:1 to clean it. Keep in mind that if the dirt has gotten into the wood, it cannot be removed except by sanding it down, which we do not recommend. It is better to keep it clean in the first place. Washing your hands first helps! On an unfinished neck, some discoloration after many hours of playing is normal. Be sure to follow all of the manufacturers recommended safety precautions when using any of these oils or waxes.

That's what I'm talkin' about.

I know, I know! Believe me, I want to show off my Albert Lee even more than you guys want to see it. But having no camera does complicate matters. I'll get a pic up, but I gotta figure out which of my friends actually has a decent camera.

Oh, and thanks to all who have offered advice! As I mentioned earlier, I touched up the neck and it's just fine now. Now I can worry about other more important things - like my playing ability. :p

Just ship it to me, I'll check it out for a few days and then send it off to the next forum member!

Ok, for the dimensionally challenged, does "Murphy's Oil Soap diluted 3:1" mean 1 oil to 3 water, or vv?
