As of last Friday, Nov 24th, I am a part of the Musicman bass family! I purchased a new Musicman SR5 HH, Black, Maple board, matching headstock, black PG. One of the meanest looking basses around! I was always a Jazz bass player until my drummer walked into band practice 2 weeks ago with a Stingray 4 and plugged it into my amp. When I heard the first note, I knew I had to have one! I am a 5 string player, so that was an easy option. One of the brothers on this board, MoonDog, had been telling me for months to try a MM SR5 HS (because of the added J pickup) but for some reason I was stubborn. After I heard my drummer's bass, the closest I could find with a maple board was a local store that had an SR5 HH with matching headstock (thanks to the vendor and inventory features on the Ernie Ball website). I raced there and bought it immediately!
I like this bass so much, my Fender Marcus Miller Jazz V was just placed on ebay today, and the SR5 has taken the #1 spot in my bass chain!!! Even over my now 2nd favorite Fender American Jazz Deluxe V (with the active preamp removed because it sounded very stale and dry). While I’m on the active preamp subject, I must state that the SR5 active preamp sounds fantastic! Very alive! I am also blown away by the “wood feel” of the back of the neck too. It makes me wash my hands before I play every time, but that’s no big deal. I’ll get over that soon enough. I can’t wait to play the next show with my new SR5!
This bass is just what I needed! I am so impressed with it, that as soon as I can find the similar SR5 with the HS pickup configuration, I’m buying that too!! Excellent job Ernie Ball/Musicman!
P.S. The guitarist in my band has 2 Ernie Ball Musicman John Petrucci guitars! He plays those exclusively!
My gear to amplify my new MM SR5 HH Beast:
Bergantino HT322 cabinet
Ampeg SVP-CL preamp
Crest CA9 poweramp
Shure ULXP4 wireless
