pickups on 20th Silo

Just wondering about the pickups on the 20th. I love the neck pickup for the clarity that it has and the almost single-coil sound it sometimes gives me. I seem to spend most time with the neck pickup and the middle position.

I guess this could be a question about EBMM guitars in general. What is the starting point when EBMM selects a pickup for a non-signature guitar? For instance, what was the starting point for the 20th? Or, does Dudley, Sterling, and whoever else (i.e., Drew) already have an idea of what they want a pickup to sound like before going to Dimarzio and asking for a pickup? Do they take a stock Dimarzio, drop it in, see what it sounds like, and go to Dimarzio and have them tweak it?

Oh...and a couple more questions. Does Dimarzio send someone out to SLO when it comes time to talk pickups? Or do these things happen over the phone? Mostly in person? Mostly not in person? I mean obviously there has to be a back-and-forth between EBMM and Dimarzio until the pickups are right. Just wondering how that happens.

Just to inform:

I e-mailed DiMarzio a couple of weeks ago about the closest sounding pickups to the 20th Anniversary pickups, and they replied:

"Virtual PAF neck model & F-spaced Virtual Hot PAF bridge model."

Thought you guys would like to know. Unless this has been discussed and clarified earlier.

I had the chance to play one in paris thru my voodu valve preamp...it is nice because it has a led input indicator...

I was very inmpressend by the signal level cause it was much higher than the silo or the axis !!!!

the sound is a mistery to me...hot and high level like traditional humbuckers, but very clear in high frequencies, like single coins....

off topic: just dealing my official endorsment with rocktron USA...I 'm very happy cause this voodu preamp is the only thing I play since the first demo tour...I'll let know as soon as I'll have more news

I love the pickups on my 20th, well the guitar in general is the best I've ever played, but I'm still getting used to the sound difference between this and my LP. I'm having to spend more time playing with amp settings than I used to, which I'm really enjoying as it makes me experiment a lot more

Just an addendum note about DiMarzio Virtual PAF's...
If you ever chose to coil split 'em in the future,,,
they are supposed to have one of the best split coil tones around...

No two instruments are the same as far as choosing pickups. It depends completely on the artist, or the sound that we are looking to achieve in that model. As for the Silhouette 20th, we wanted a really good vintage humbucker sound, with covers. DiMarzio had sampled us the Virtual PAF and since we are using that in Silhouettes, it was a matter of making sure it sounded right with the cover and in the new body with the mahogany. It was more than right. The Hot Virtual PAF bridge pickup is new to the 20th, and really completed the package.

As for working with DiMarzio, we have a great relationship, and both Larry and Steve Blucher are good friends of BP and myself. They have come out to California to work on projects, and also work with artists in New York when that is convenient. Most often we discuss pickups over the phone, receive samples and evaluate them, and make another set until we get the right sound.

I'm getting really enthusiast with di marzio pickups...the HSS config on my silo is incredible....

I've been told that the hum is is virtual paf, is that right? any ideas of the name the singles ?

Frankly, I'm not familiar the Hot virtual PAF...
but I would assume it's safe to say that it probably would work great...
AS it sounds like it just the same pickup overwound...

So in fact, it probably would create a great quack tone
when both of 'em are slipt, and the switch is the middle position...

Thanks Lucid, that was what I was looking for. I've been thinking about dropping one of these in my silhouette for a while now...guess I can give a review when I install it. Thanks again!
