I already find the double pickup Stingrays versatile with as many usable tones as one could need/want.

So, when are they going to change the fundamental design of the instrument to something that was probably tried during the prototype stage and abandoned? It ain't all about the number of knobs, and switches, ya know...

Um---does "never" work for you?

Why not just get a $$ if that's the setup you're looking for? If you're looking for an overpriced log with cheap plastic parts that break before leaving the store, definitely go for a W@rw!ck. I'll admit that they sound good, but so do Stingrays, Sterlings, and Bongos. The differences give us choices. This reminds me of the "The Bass Industry" thread. If manufacturers had never done their own thing and dared to be different, the instrument would never have progressed past the Precision Bass, or maybe even the acoustic upright. Let Hans and BP each do their own thing.

I always thought it would be a good idea to have retractable frets on a bass.

When will we get one of those, Sterling???

I'd guess that such a beast will appear when you buy one, take a pair of wire clippers, a soldering iron and a drill and butcher the poor thing.

Just what's wrong with the way it is, anyway?

I got to meet Dr. Amar Bose (that's Bose as in the company) about a month ago. He talked for a couple of hours to users of the Bose L1. Fascinating guy.

He made a really good point about perception. What matters at the end of the day is how the product performs, not what buttons, knobs or switches it has. Even specs on paper mean nothing in the real world. It does not matter how you get there...the sound that you perceive is the important thing. If you can do it with a simpler device, then extra controls are irrelevant.

The point here is that coil taps and pan pots in theory ought to make the bass "more versatile", whatever that means, but what's actually important is, can the bass make the sound you want or not? If so, then why do you need that extra stuff?

If the bass sounds good and does what you need it to do, then you don't need it to have coil taps or a pan knob.

There is a reason why the Double bass is still king of the orchestra with a centuries old design.....:D

To be honest I think that the bass is only as good as the operator and adding more bells and whistles just confuses the user and muddies the sound.
This is why I am still outplayed by my SR5 HS....stunning bass and more sounds than I need, same with the SR4 HS.

I like the Stingray design because it's NOT about pan pots. How many good sound "positions" do you get out of a pan pot anyway? For me, it's usually 3 or 4, and only 2 that I end up using live.

The rays have really different sounds in each position, but each is clean and clear and you can tweak a lot w/ the EQ. Now I just need to get to a cash position where I can buy one!

when are they finally gonna offer the stingray with P-bass pickups?

If i send you some of my own wood, will you guys build me a stringray 4 string with 2 p pickups and a midi pickup, oh yeah, and an active passive switch.

it would be so much cheaper cause you wouldn't need to buy wood right?

oh, i want a sparkle finish too.

Anyone who wants a MusicMan bass with double humbuckers and a pan pot can certainly have their wish fulfilled with a Bongo HH.

So remember, kids:

- Bongo with dual pickups, pan pot.

- SR4 or SR5 with dual pickups, 5 way switch.

- Sterling with dual pickups, 5 way switch.

Something for everyone!

Now come on guys, give a guy a break here Okay?
There's nothing wrong with the SR5 and there's nothing wrong with asking question too. If the guy wants more options then thats fine. Actually, having a balance control is not such a bad idea and I wouldn't send the guy to buy a $$$$ bass just for asking the question (duhhh?!?).
If you are looking at your bass as a tool to do the job and not as a pagan temple then go ahead and tweek it until you're happy. Changing the electronics is always reversable and usualy not a hard thing to do.

IMHO: YOUR TONE IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN YOUR BASS

BTW, I know you guys mean well, but remember that not everyone here has been around the forum long enough to have seen these questions asked before.

Didn't mean to be harsh, just got into making my point. I hope it was understood.

A few of you forgot to close your tags, dont worry, I got it :).

P.S. I think a pan/5 way is a cool mix. It would make the HS realtively pointless. You'd basically have your normal buckers like the original ray. Then all sorts of single coil options...

P.S.2 I like the retractable frets idea :).

methinks *most* people would be confused if you slapped two additional 3-way switches on an EBMM bass. But, ther would probably also be a few extra good sounds in that bass. But I don't think it'll happen, because it would be yet another option, and we don't have to few of those as it is, do we?

Now, if Steve Morse played bass, maybe...
