NI GuitarRig 2 Live? Who uses GR2 Live?

guys,

i always think bout smallening my gear to carry on stage (except guitars).
so i thought bout playing through NI GR2 w/macbook.
did anyone of you test that live?
if yes, how bout monitoring?
to be honest. i am a huge tube fan and never liked L6 or similar products.
whats your opinion?

How are you going to switch patches?

GR2 comes with a complete footswitch where the soundcard also is included.
so thats very easy done cause you can programm which switch is for what.

I know someone that uses amp farm live, but really is the cost worth it? Add together a rock solid computer etc. Remember a good amp holds its value, software and computers go down in value so quick. Nothing beats a good sounding amp

I have used quite a few different set ups live. Even when I was in my last band which we did mainly covers, I had 40 something diffenrent patches. It was nice having the different sounds but the drawbacks seemed to outwiegh the benefits. There was too much hassle to get all the presets the same volume, the dynamics was also a big issue not being able to play at all with your volume rolled off because your tone would dissappear. Any way sorry to ramble on, as Colin said nothing beats a good sounding amp.

i was afraid to hear that.
i am very very happy with my versatile tube amp. ENGL.
but i thought i can safe weight. the engl combo has 42 kg (80 pds?).
since i have an intel mac book i thought bout a mac based live solution.
well. seems to be a good but not practical idea. and GR2 is not cheap at all!

Am just not a fan of digiwannasoundlikeamps, especially not live. To me it’s like camping in a virtual forest, or driving a virtual car: everything looks real but is missing the feel.

My Line 6 amp crashes from time to time. I am sure a computer would give you no end of hassle on the road, Mac PC or otherwise.

so i think i stay with my heavy tube amps and stay happy and try to find someone who is going to carry it for me ;-))

Many professional tours are using computer controlled and canned music these days. And many more are switching to the laptop and Amplitube-2 or Guitar-Rig 2 for their guitar setups. Pumped into a mixers PA and having a good soundman is the key, and it will sound as good as tube does. Ive been playing for over 35 years and have been involved in the digital world for almost as long. I have had all the setups mentioned at one time or another, and for convienence sake the laptop (or Pod type unit) is the way to go if there's a PA and someone good to run the board. That and ear monitors are the wave of the future. That said, I still like my old Twin and TSL tube sounds too.... Nothing wrong with either tube or digital here these days. Its yer fingers that will make or break you

When I saw Tenacious D the other week, the guitar player was using some kind of Line 6 rig into the PA, with no cabs on stage. I saw his FBV shortboard at his feet. The tone was great! Like you say, the sound man is the key. All the backup band used in-ears. I think this really is the way to go for big gigs like this.
