Steve’s Stunt Double Download and Score:

Steve's Stunt Double Score

In celebration of the SMB/Dregs Tour, NAMM, etc., here is my musical tribute to Steve Morse and the Dixie Dregs with some notes off the Hectic Watermelon band website in the members area.

This is the oldest tune that we decided to put on our new album as most of the material was written somewhere between 2005 and 2006. This is an oldie but goodie, written in 1996 shortly after I moved back into mild-mannered civilian life from the furious world of a US Navy SEAL Team operator. Steve’s Stunt Double was also influenced by all the fun I was having with my new guitar, the Ernie Ball Steve Morse model, which would quickly become my main axe! During this time, the Steve Morse Band was cranking out some killer albums, and then the Dregs released both a live album and new album with Jerry Goodman, which had me transcribing for days! Learning all that music was super inspirational for me. This tune came from all that good energy. Recently, it was fun to include a good old straight up instrumental rock tune like this amidst all the more “hectic” music of Hectic Watermelon. No matter how much esoteric stuff you learn in an MM composition program, it is still good to be a rocker at heart. We had two versions of it for the album, a very slick and polished one, and the rawer and gutsier version that I ultimately chose as track number 9. It was also the first tune that Jerry laid down violin for us in the studio—which was very exciting! Ultimately, I have always admired how Steve is such a complete musician and tremendous role model for players of all ages, so here’s to Steve and the Dregs!

Great song !

Thanks a lot John for sharing. As a complete Morse addict, I was stunned by how you are able to sound and compose like Steve. In a blind test, I would have say that Steve and the Dregs were playing. For me, it is the biggest compliment I can pay somebody !

Wow, John. Thanks for your service in The Teams.

Great playing too.

When you see Bruce and Frank from Egnater, please tell them good luck at NAMM.

Right on, Colin, I'm glad Keith told me about this forum as well! Folks are really chill here compared to x,y,z...

Fbecir,

Ya, this one is definitely in the hat tip catagory. All the other tunes on this album have quite a different sound, but I do indeed appreciate your kind words. Jerry Goodman's touch here really helps get that good old Dregs sound too!

Roger that roburado!

Hello John

You are able to play like a chameleon. Steve Morse has the same knack. To be able to fit in every musical environment is a great ability.
By the way, the link in your signature :
Hectic Watermelon CD with Jerry Goodman at Abstract Logix

does not work ...

Nice tribute, John.

JC...the beginning chord prog sounds like a Phish thing to me...very cool. I'm sure Trey grabbed some inspurrration from Dregs too at somepoint. I totally dig this stuff though brother!

Thanks Beej, Kbaim, Roubster and the Orange Channel! Glad you guys dig our Dregs hat tip. I look forward to seeing some of you at the Dregs show tomorrow night at the Coach House! I call Keith when I get there after fighting through the traffic from San Diego. Orange Channel, maybe I’ll see you at NAMM if you are still going. I’ll be in and out of Egnater amps booth on Saturday.
