I'm trying out for a new band tonight.

A mix of funk/R&B/Motown...supported by a full horn section. Always wanted to play in a band like that.

I went to see their last gig and they had a substitute player who was WAY better than I am. Intimidating.

I'm just a wee bit nervous.

Wow. Cool. You are a lucky man. If only there were bands around here that played anything but ZZ Top, and other such moldy rock... (how many times have I heard, "You guys know Sweet Home Alabaaaammmm???")

Good luck with it. Sounds like some fun music.

Good luck with the try-out, man!!

Don't sweat it. Realisticly, there's always gonna be someone who's better than you. You have to put that out of your mind, be confident in your own capabilities and just try to have some fun ;)

If the style of music agrees with you, I'm sure you'll do well!

Keep us posted.

Good luck. When I am watching someone else play I always figure they are way better than I am. When I play and they watch they tell me I am way better than them.

Jest play the notes and you''ll do fine.

Good luck Andrew!

I tried out with a horn band a little less that two years ago but didn't get the gig. It came down between my and one other guy and he got the gig.

Later, I learned some of the politics in that 12 piece band and decided that I was fortunate to have not gotten the gig.

Good luck, dude, remember, let the music play YOU, and let the white space speak as loudly as the busy parts. You'll do fine...

Finally had the audition last night.

Looks promising!

Naturally I was nervous and screwed up a whole lot for the first 20 minutes.

The fact that half the songs were in different keys (something I didn't know beforehand) didn't help! I hate having to transpose stuff played in first position on the fly because the fingerings change (yet another reason why five-strings are good...but first position is the way I learned the tunes to prep for this).

But after a while things loosened up and we wound up having a great time.

They were also auditioning another bass player, and a second singer, and a keyboard player. So it was a bit chaotic.

I should know later this week.
