What would YOU like to see in the BFR offerings that were recently announced at Winter NAMM 2007?

The current offering is that the guitars will ship with a quilted or flamed maple top, luck of the draw (noting that they will all be '10' grade tops).

Some of us have expressed an interest in being able to specifiy quilt or flame top, which will likely cause unacceptable backlog problems.

Therefore, some alternate ideas have been put forth, such as making all the BFR Luke's with flame tops, and all the BFR Petrucci's with quilt tops, etc.

This is a part 2 of a 2-part poll to gauge interest in the various possibilities.

Maybe the flame or quilt can be tied to a color?

Bahama Blue would look best with Flame
Red would look best with Flame
Blackburst with Quilt
Walnut with quilt.

Thoughts?

Adam,

Well, let's just stick to the initial choices of the poll for now. I didn't want to overwhelm anyone.. and I think a scheme like the one you mentioned would be not much different than letting us specify quilt or flame (you'd be specifying it via your color choice). I didn't allow the option of 'user-specification' because Dargin made it clear that such a scheme would be horrible for backlog.

This portion of the poll is just to see where the quilt vs. flame preferences lie.

Adamrogo,

I appreciate the brainstorming. Perhaps the various responses to these two inital polls will help eliminate some ideas, and maybe a future poll will include more possibilites if there's no discernable 'best approach' from these offerings. It's awfully hard to get a consensus from this group.. especially if there are too many choices! ;)

I want quilt JP F-1 and quilt Luke, but I think that EBMM's plan of picking the top for us is going to be the best way.

My thoughts are Bahama, Ruby, Blackburst, and Walnut will all look best with quilt.

The point is that it will be very difficult to get everyone to agree on any of this.

It is going to be pretty tough, I agree, but in all honesty, leaving the top to the random discretion of the builder just doesn't cut it. If I knew there was just going to be a flame F-1, I wouldn't buy one. If I knew it was going to be quilt I would buy one (even though I already placed my order). It's just that I know there's something I want, I'm paying alot for it, and there's a 50% chance that I'll be paying for something I don't really want.

Quilt JP, flame Luke, set it in stone! :p

One of the problems is availability of wood. Flame is more plentiful than quilt, supposedly. I'll try to dig up Dargin's post on the matter. Potentially, that could make a backlog (no pun intended) for quilt longer than one for flame, which sort of sucks. I almost rather just leave it to EBMM to give me what's available at any given time. Let's face it. Does flame sound different from quilt? I'm betting it doesn't have a huge difference. So, I imagine that functionally they're going to be the same.

Nobody is saying that there's an audible difference. It's completely visual and personal preference. They will be amazing guitars no matter what.

Even so, I still don't want to order something that doesn't appeal to me visually. Would you order an LE instrument if you wouldn't be told what the color was? Sure, it'd be a great guitar as quality goes, and it would play great, and it would be the model you like... but you'd have no idea if you'd like the end result.

Maybe it would come in one of two colors.. bubble gum pink or blue dawn, but you wouldn't get to specify which color... and you hate sparkles.
:D

Let's be honest here, after you've settled on a model that is comfortable in your hands, what's the next attribute that drives your purchasing decision? (Okay, Okay.. after some of you select hardtail or trem! ;))

I love guys like adam that keep making their point that they wont preorder a guitar. Give it a rest. The solution for you is to buy one from a stores inventory. There are hundreds of guitars that have been ordered with no customer attached. To say that you wont buy one because you cant preorder it is kind of silly.

Sorry BP, I don't mean to sound so negative- I've already ordered one, and paid most of it off!

I just don't know which route to go, I want one badly and quickly, but I want quilt
