Rosewood baby. I did A/B the two fretboards on the SR and rosewood had THE sound. Such a sweet sound for slap & pop.

My Sterling is my first maple board bass and I likey lots!! I also like the warmth of rosewood too....so I guess I'm indifferent. Not sure I have ever played ebony, but sounds like I'll have to try it judging from the comments on here.

Put me in the group that thinks it depends on the bass color, pickguard color, & stuff like that. I have a black 'Ray with a rosewood board, and I will soon have another 'Ray with a maple board. I generally prefer rosewood with sunbursts, and I love the look of maple with black & natural (weird, considering my black 'Ray has rosewood).

F@nder basses with maple boards just don't look right to me.

I prefer rosewood. Somebody told me years ago that a darker fingerboard will always give better visual cues...ie. frets and markers show much better on a darker board..

Tan rosewood is my fave though...

I voted maple, despite the fact that my Sterling is rosewood. I find that rosewood fingerboards must have a matching headstock, while maple fingerboards mustn't, in most cases.

I like flame maple fret board first, then birdseye maple board, then basswood board but they are all hard to find now days

My Sabre has a maple board and it is just too bright at times...awesome slap tones though...my Stingray has a dark purple colored rosewood board and just feels right with some warm bottom end...

I like both but prefer these combos for looks: Maple with dark finishes (and Natural). Rosewood with all light finishes

Maple, with a fresh coat of Birchwood Casey Gunstock oil and wax! Just like new!!!

I get plenty of warmth out of my maple board... I really think the difference is overblown. and I have used both for years. Or maybe I just don't care about the difference.

rosewood dont dirty up like oil/waxed maple does.in fact i dont like laquered maple when it wears through either.so from a maintenance point of view rosewood all the way.thats why i just got a maple boarded Sterling

I like Maple. I play a P Bass right now with a Maple Fretboard (only because my current family situation is not allowing me the option of getting the MM that I desire, a Bongo).

A maple fretboard tends to help tame an overly natured "Bassy" Bass guitar. It lends a little more treble to the tone.

+ I really love the feel of Maple. Ebony is my favorite of the 3, but hard to find.....
