I finally got to play a SM Y2D and I noticed two things regarding the single coil pickup. First, there was an incredibly loud hum when using the single coil pickup. The bridge and neck sounded fine......only the single coil was unbearably loud. This was in a music store with flourescant lights (the owner said that was probably the problem).

Also, I noticed the single coil itself was set on the guitar with one end very low
and the other very high on an angle. I figured maybe that was the problem.

Has anyone experienced the same problem.....any thoughts?

Thanks,
Ron

The hum is normal, and the store owner was probably right. Dimmer switches are the worst culprit for inducing hum like this.

As for the height, you can always adjust it to how ever you want it.

There's no silent circuit on the Y2D and so the single coil picks up hum like any non-humbucking pickup. Sounds like it was just a really bad environment for noise. Try picking up another single coil guitar while sitting in the same spot and you'll notice the same thing.

As for the height, it's normally set up like that but is easily adjustable. The only thing the angle changes is the sensitivity to bass and treble - it doesn't have anything to do with the hum.

Did you like the Y2D?

Yup, like the other guys said, it's just normal single coil hum. After many hours of playing my Y2d I set my single coil level and very close to the strings to get the output as close as possible to the humbuckers. That thing shreds, man! It sounds really good for that "Yngwie" like single coil sound, and it also makes for a great blues tone with a little dirt in the signal.

If you're thinking of getting one, just do it. :D You won't regret the decision. ;)

Morse himself likes to switch to that pickup quite quickly from the humbuckers to single coil for cleaner stuff, but at a slightly lower volume
I keep mine low so I can do just this. It had never occured to me to have a pickup all set for a clean sound with no need to mess with the vol control before I saw Steve do it. Great idea.

its a good idea, but i tend to play clean more often so i need it to be as loud as the humbuckers, whch i guess i dont use on their own that often. the single coil sounds great up LOUD!
I seem to remember a friendly forum member telling you to raise that sucker Rob ;)

if i remember it correctly, it´s setup this way, because Steve Morse wants to have it this way.
