If you can get your hands on one of the soldering iron stands that has the little piece of sponge in the bottom I'd recommend it.

You keep the sponge wet and clean the tip of the iron in it every so often when you're working, that helps.

Also you can often get different sized tips for your soldering iron so if you think yours is too big/small you've got some options there.

Solder suckers are really handy for removing old solder from your pot legs, switches etc.

Don't solder stuff together by just melting a load of solder onto the tip of the iron an jabbing it onto the pieces you're soldering together!
'Tin' the iron by melting a little solder onto it then use the iron to heat the pot leg and wire union when it's hot run the solder iinto it, It should melt and make a good join.

When it's set, the solder you have a shiny appearance. A 'dull' or 'cloudy' appearance to the solder isn't a good sign.

Oh yeah, mind your fingers....

And I don't know about anyone else out there but I never seem to get tone pots working first time.

Mind you that's not a problem on an Axis !

Here's one I learend this weekend:

DON'T TOUCH ANY PART OF THE IRON!!! EVEN THE PART NEAR THE HANDLE. IT'S HOTTER THAN JEBUS AND BURNS A LOT!

(yes - I'm typing this without the current use of my pointer finger on my right hand)
