Well, after playing some slow blues on my last recording I've gone to the other extreme and done a bit of Vai-type stuff. Basically I got a backing track of his song Boston Rain Melody and played over it. However, at the time of recording, I hadn't heard the original so my "version" is, unsuprisingly, very different to the Vai one (which, now I have heard it, is amazingly good - check it out!)

It's a bit tricky doing Vai with an Axis cos you can't pull up on the trem. I've mixed up some slow licks, fast licks and a bit of off-the-wall phrasing to keep things interesting and stuck a bit of a mad cadenza on the end.

Hope you like it.

interesting, i dont even recognize the backing track, as your playing is so different from the original!!! I try to approach backing tracks the same way, especially new ones that i havent heard before, you want to put your own mark on it without the sound of the original lead playing in your head, that way you can think clearly and react to the chord changes etc by instinct.
