If there was no Morse, Petrucci would probably not be playing the way he is respectfully.
On that thought, Steve Morse is the ultimate guitarist and musician to me, but I dont have his guitar. I just bought a Silo because it has it's own appeal to me and also the 20th Silo. I ordered a Silo Special more specifically because I have been listening to Vinnie Moore A LOT and he just completely inspired me with his playing and his tone...so I will put in the same PUPs as he uses, but it's still a bit different since it will have a Piezo.
I am a huge fan of Petrucci as well and that might be my next Ball, but that always changes. I already had a Luke which did really like for the feel and comfort and I like Lukes tone as well. I will ge another on day. I just love them all, but I honestly am not a huge fan of the AL looks, and the Benji is pointless to me IMO.

id never heard of JP when i got his sig guitar. i read a lot about the guitar and initially hestiated but then pulled the trigger. I have 1 DT cd and its cool but i dont listen to it all that much.

i got in to AL and Luke b/c of this board (and Luke especially after open house and dallas gigs) and became a fan of both which led me to buy both their sigs

Agreed, Morse's influence is apparent in JP's playing and writing. Morse is fantastic to me on an intellectual level. He just hasn't touched me on a visceral or emotional one. That may change if I see him live. I wouldn't be surprised if something like that would change my mind.

I always dug Steve Morse from way back when, but really didn't think about his signature guitar much. I've been pretty much a Al fan since the Emmylou Harris day's and own every CD/LP he has done. Got a DVD called "Albert Lee Highlights" (featuring Sterling Ball on bass) and really loved the tone on the DVD and decided I'd really like a AL.

Called up my somewhat local (45 miles away through hell traffic) EBMM dealer and asked if he had any AL's in-stock. His reply was "not now, had 4 of them last month, but Albert came and did a clinic a few weeks ago and sold them all that night". Was kinda bummed out. Decided to take the trip anyway to see how other EBMM's sounded and walked out with a Morse, great guitar!

Nine months later, went back and he had a few AL's instock, sat down and played 'em and walked out with a AL.

Both great guitars, the dealer usually stocks 12 or so EBMM guitars and have had a chance to play most all of 'em, but both the Morse and AL just had the most "vibe" I was looking for. The bonus factor was finding a really cool dealer independent dealer that I don't mind driving a hour and half (and passing 3 Guitar Centers and a 2 Sam Ash's and a dozen or so other shops) to do business with that has great prices and quality stuff. The problem is that every time I'm in his area, my checkbook seems to take a major hit ;)

This is an interesting question. Personally, I am a HUGE fan of Steve Morse and John Petrucci. Oddly enough, that was the reason why I didn't want to get one of their custom guitars. These guys are such great guitarists, I would feel like such a schmuck playing a guitar with their names on it. I am so far away from their league it just doesn't seem right. Lame reasoning, I know.

It doesn't matter, I think the Silhouette Special is the right guitar for me anyway. ;)

Don't knock Benji. He probably makes more money than JP, SM, SL and AL combined. Seriously. Blink doesn't do it for me, but good for him. I'd love to achieve what he has.

Has anyone played that guitar? What is the pickup and what does the neck feel like?

Benji plays for Good Charlotte not Blink 182. Blink 182 doesn't do it for me either... but Good Charlotte is even worse!

I have 2 Sigs...... the EVH and my Satch JS1.

EVH Fan ? : Not really.... never got into VH stuff at all, but I love the necks, so bought an AXIS, then when I saw the quilt on my Trans Blue EVH I had to have it.
It's a bit like money in the bank too, so was a no-brainer.

Satch Fan ? : Yep, for sure........ and love the guitar for what it is.. and that Satch tone is right there.

I have recently decided to go for a JP6 too, so that will be my 3rd sig.
95% it's gonna be a Blue Dawn 2007 LE.
I'm listening to a fair bit of his stuff too, and would say I'm a fan....... but that's not why I'm getting one.

Since when is there a correlation between income and talent? Seriously.

Don't get me wrong, maybe he's a good guitarist - I am so far removed from that culture that I can't even begin judge. But the "don't criticize what somebody does because they make a lot of money at it" argument is BS. As an extreme counterexample, Pablo Escobar (infamous Colombian drug dealer) was at one time the seventh-richest man in the world, but I think just about anybody would find plenty to criticize in how he made it.

Sorry, don't mean to come down on you...it's just one of those things, you know?

Anyway, to get back on topic, I actually got into Albert Lee after the fact - my friend got me into EBMM but he was really into his ASS. It wasn't exactly my style, but I started browsing the website and the AL just blew me away stylistically, and the configuration seemed pretty much ideal to me. But when I fell in love with the guitar, I felt compelled to learn more about the artist. Long story short, 18 months later I'm a pretty big fan of his, and I've got a lot of respect for the guy.

I didn't make any correlation between talent and income. I'm just arguing that people shouldn't write off what he chooses to do because he isn't a shredder. He's doing something right. He has a signature model and we don't. That's all I'm saying.

(now this is becoming an interesting thread)

Anyway, it's all good. I love these forums.

Yep. That was the one. I am looking at getting an AL hopefully soon...simply a great guitar. The feel, the tone, and who can forget....the looks of an AL. :D
Great guitar simply put.

Well, while JP is probably my favorite player now, I didn't buy my first JP because of him. I was a huge DT fan and was well aware of his EBMM guitar. I decided to buy the guitar 30 seconds after I first played one I found at GC. I put the guitar down, took out my cell phone, called the wife and told her I was ordering a guitar from California and don't worry, it won't be done for 4 months so we won't be charged till then.

I have a tremendous admiration for Petrucci's skill, technique and tone, but i don't care for Dream Theater's music. I've only heard a few minutes of it, and it didn't really grab me at all.

But the guitar is pretty amazing. I mainly ended up buying a JP7 because it was the only production 7-string available with a piezo, so i sold my Parker Fly Classic (which i loved) and bought a JP7.

Darren, give a listen to An Evening with John Petrucci and Jordan Rudess.

I'm not a big DT fan either, but I really like this one. Totally different.
