I haven't even been aware that EB/MM makes guitars. I have seen basses and knew about the strings and volume pedal but guitars..no.
So I was out shopping (I think it was 2002) for my first brand new top shelf guitar and went to try out some Les Pauls and pricier Strats. At the fourth shop the dealer has just got his first ever shipment of Music Man's. The 4+2 headstock looked familiar and guitars looked nice, so I asked to see what is this
After aprox. one second of grabbing the neck of an Axis SS I knew !
I wanted to buy it right on the spot but the dealer had no prices calculated yet so I had to go home and wait a day or two. Meanwhile I surfed a bit and found out all about MM and Axis and EVH and so on. Similary to EB/MM I have heard Jump and few other hits, and of course I knew who the EVH is but was never really a fan (and certainly never had any affection for Floyd Rose guitars, my Axis SS is hardtail).
So at the end I didn't buy it because of EVH or even EB/MM, I bought it just because the guitar felt really good in my hands.

I play it because the EVH bridge pickup is the SICKEST pickup ever.

It took me a long time of intermittently listening to "Awake" for 6 months or so before I "got" DT. Since you've only heard a few minutes, it's a good bet you didn't hear more than just an introduction to a song.

Actually, although I appreciate all the work he has done, I would not call myself a huge fan of EVH, although I have my 1995 EVH...

I'm not a fan of DT either, and I bought When Dream and Day Unite when it came out. Seen them live, etc. I used to love them, but my tastes have change 180 degrees. Does that mean I don't "get it" anymore? That just irks me.
(I'm not really pissed, but I rarely get to use that red face.) That's the cool thing about music. Music touches people differently and that's okay.

My shopping had taken me through the other brands as well, and I was barely aware EBMM was still making guitars. Small guitar shop handed me the axe when it was obvious I was going to be hard to please. Haven't been able to get it out of my hands since.

That's the cool thing about music. Music touches people differently and that's okay.
My only point was that DT often isn't terribly accessible to many, and I didn't really like them for long time. I first heard them in 1992 when "Pull Me Under" came out, and I hated them. Definitely an acquired taste. It's certainly not for everyone. People look for different stuff in music, and they are touched by different things. Tastes evolve too. That's totally fine. All of it is fine. For me, getting into DT was also a 180-degree shift. Before that, rock had to be funky and bluesy for me to be into it. My favorite stuff at the time was Hendrix and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Funky and bluesy are the last two words I'd use to describe DT and JP.

my JP guitar got me into dream theater. I mean I had a couple of CDs, and then I found this guitar... and decided to listen even more.... it was my first EBMM actually, I didn't even know it was a sig model until I bought it (rescued it) and took it home!

Never was a huge DT fan but I've always been in awe of Petrucci's playing. I never really paid much attention to the JP guitars, then I saw the Pet clinic at Pete's last year. Petrucci again blew me away, both his playing and his down to earth humbleness. It was that day that I first tried a JP6, I left the clinic pining for one even though walking into the clinic, I had intentions of revisiting an Axis (owned one a few years back, loved how it felt, played and sounded, never really dug the Floyd Rose). Two weeks later, I was back at Pete's plunking down the plastic for my used white sparkle JP6 and haven't looked back since, it's been my number 1 since I got my hands on it.
