Thanks for the neat pics guys. I kinda looks like the pickguard on the earliest proto's were inspired by the humongous pickguard on Mr. Morse's tele/strat hybrids. Are there any other photo's of this particular guitar in the EBMM vaults.... just curious.

on the Steve Morse Faniste: Steve Morse / Dixie Dregs Tribute I found the following notes:

The following information regarding Steve's Music Man guitar was provided courtesy of Andrew Campbell

First, if one studies the 2 kansas music videos that were released in support of "Power" ("All I
Wanted," 1986, directed by Wayne Isham; "Can't Cry Anymore", 1986) you can clearly see
Steve's signature guitar in an early stage of development. Notable features:

- the humbucking pickups were white/cream colored instead of black - a color that appears to be a bit darker and greener than the blueburst we have come to know.
the wood also seems grainier. perhaps not poplar?
- a pickguard that is cut to cover a much larger area of the lower bout of the guitar, where the
knobs and controls typically sit. Think Marcus Miller's pickguard.

More controls:
Three black knobs instead of the two on the production model.
Three additional Gibson Les Paul style knobs (each of which look to be numbered), further back in a line, above the main black controls. An Additional smaller toggle switch.

Second, there were important changes in the production specs of the guitar in the early 90s.
a) As of the January 1992 catalog, neck finishes were "catalyzed lacquer, velvet" [meaning a
satin finish] and Bodies were finished in "catalyzed lacquer, high gloss". I believe this lasted
through 1993 and then (per the January 1994 catalog), neck finishes (inspired by the Van
Halen model success) were "Gun stock oil and hand-rubbed special wax blend." Bodies were
likewise changed to a "High gloss Polyester" finish.

b) As of the January 1992 catalog, Music Man began using the 5 bolt neck attachment with
the sculptured neck joint, as used today.

c) The earliest tremolo systems (late 80s and perhaps a bit later) were not Floyd Rose
licensed systems. They were similar in that they had tuners on the bridge and a string locking
system at the nut, but they were another design entirely. I know this having seen a 1988
tremolo version at a guitar show. Perhaps other readers can add more detail here!

Hello

If you want to study the videos, here is a link for "Can't Cry Anymore" :

The pickups are white and it seems that there are a lot of buttons ...
