I like Chuck and i like green basses so that picture made me smile.

Exactly what I was thinking. Chuck's playing was one of the things that inspired me to first pick up the bass.

I guess it's good to be Lord Bovine these days, huh?

Chuck is one of the most humble, down to earth down to earth guys I've met and I was almost afraid to call him when I needed a new headliner for SOB when Billy Sheehan dropped out due to tour conflicts last Summer but I got his number from Ed Friedland I think, called got voicemail (whew) and left a message then didn't hear back for a while as he was in Europe when I called. A few weeks pass and I'm stuckin a major traffic jam here in Phoenix and it's like 120 degrees and the AC in the 380SL hadabout as much airflow to it as if Jack was sitting across the room from you blowing at you through a twisty straw.....my cell rings.

I think its one of the usual suspects like Jack or my asshole brother Chuck and I'm all hot, sweaty, in traffic, out of smokes, pissed off and eyeballing the temperature gauge on the SL inch closer and closer to the redline and keeping an eye out for fast escape routes to the right in case she overheats. Let's just say I was in no mood to be digging around in my pocket for my cell phone right then and by doing so I spilt my 7-11 "Big Grab" of Mountain Dew in my lap.

Poor Chuck....I think I answered it "What??? What the fu#k do you want mothefu#cker?????

Once he told me who it was I apologized and told him the traffic scenario he laughed and we talked for about an hour...all the way crosstown in 10 mph bumper to bumper traffic ...I didn't notice it at and before I knew it I was home and my cell battery was dead and I just talked to and hired the the man who would turn out to be the soul of SOBII, Mr. Chuck Rainey.

There's my CR story, I don't have any pics of him on my couch or anything. The closest I have is a few dinner receipts I paid for and Chucks autougraph on the back of one of my checks.

Does he know who he is in the bass world? Sure he does. Is he still approachable and human just like all the rest of us (you). Yup!

That's funny! I only had that idea because Reggie bars and Mello Yello were two of my favorite things growing up. Why not share with a bass legend!

I was watching my baby daughter, so I took out the laptop and had some Photoshop fun with your photo. I was almost finished, and my wife saw it and said "Who's that guy in our living room?" She just didn't understand what I was doing. It was pretty funny.

I heard a long interview with Chuck a while back - might have been "read", but I think it was on radio. My sense was that he's clear about his approach to the instrument, knows he's good, is professional, and expects to be treated like a pro, and that was where some friction with the Dan guys cropped up in the years after Aja and Gaucho.

It's cool to be on this board where you all know and care who Chuck Rainey is. I remember suffering through the 80s when everyone thought Mark King and Flea and John Taylor were "IT" and I was saying "but I think Chuck Rainey and Ken Gradney (to mention two personal faves) are a bit ...funkier" .... if you know what I mean...

Anyway, we can live vicariously through Jack!

I saw Chuck do a clinic in Atlanta a few years ago and it was great. He talked about his career and influences, told some wonderful stories, and played a few of his more recognizable lines, which were amazing. He seemed like a really nice guy, and I'm glad to hear my impression was correct.

Given all that, I guess I can forgive him for being a Cowboys fan. Ugh.

I highly recommend Chuck's book "The Complete Electric Bass Player." Hopefully one of these days I'll wind up at the bovine palace at the same time Chuck is there.
