Modified Silo Spec ...what dyu reckon ?

I've been offered a nice 12 month old Silo Special fitted out with EMG 85/SA/SA. Has anyone tried this combination ?. How do you think the EMG's may compare to the originals (which unfortunately are't available).

I think it will sound like a Silo Special with EMGs. If you're familiar with the sound of EMGs, that'll give you a good idea of what the Silo should sound like. Over all, I think you can expect it to be very clean and clear, with a bit more "oomph!" than the stock alnico pickups. Some claim the EMGs are a bit on the sterile side, but that's all pretty subjective, me thinks.

I'd make sure the EMG installation was done properly, without any hitches, bailing wire or duct tape. Other than that, it should be a really nice combination.

The EMG"S aren't bad, BUT you could get the OEM p-ups from EBMM
if you call customer service!!

I think that would be cool. I was thinking of that combination a while back, because I love the look of EMG pups, and they definatly sound great on the Luke. So I'm guessing it would also get you a similar tone to the Luke model.
Once I get my Silo Sp, I'm thinking of putting in a DiMarzio Air Zone in bridge, and Fast Track 1 in middle and neck. Similar combination to what Vinnie Moore uses . But that also depends on how I like the stock pickups...I'm thinking they might be too vintage for my taste. We shall see.

I think it would be a cool combination too.

I'd give your stock Silo p'ups a good wringing out before you decide to change them. May need to tweak your amp a little to find the sweet spots with the stock ones. Imo, the p'up choices cover a whole lot of territory; definitely a well thought out array. I wouldn't call the stock p'ups "vintage". Maybe "classic" describes them better. The transition from clean to distortion is very smooth, using any pickup combination on the stock set up. But I must admit, I've thought of dropping an Air Zone into my maple board Silo...

Haven't had the pleasure of trying out this combination ... but what have you got to lose. Worse case scenario, you buy some new pick-ups. Best case, maybe it's a sound that rocks.

Candid, I ALWAYS play the heck out of the guitars with stock pick ups untill I decide wether I want to switch them up or not. They do sound pretty cool when Tristan plays his Silo Sp, but Vinnie Moore is just so damn amazing and the tones he gets...thats why I really want to test out that combination myself.
It never hurts to do some experimenting. The worst case scenario is putting back the stock pups and everything is groovey .

I hear ya. Guess I piped up about it cuz I was sure of changing my first Silo Special pickups before I played it. Had a set of Fralins here and ready to drop in. The more I played it stock, the more I dug it. But of course you're right; never harm in experimenting.
