mobis, what you have there is a special run we have done for our German distributor, Musik Meyer. Yours has a 2-band EQ, black finish, maple neck, white pearloid pickguard. It was completed on October 10, 2000.

Arf!

Hi, can anyone tel me a little about my Stingray. I've recently fallen back in love with it after having a brief fling elsewhere. I bought it back in 1990 ish. The serial number is 35186.
Thanks

Can you tell me when my Stingray was made? Serial number: B023700.
Thanks

Hi vladnem and welcome to the Forum.

The B023xxx serials were used on both late Pre-EB Sting Rays and very early Ernie Ball (EB) Sting Rays but more so on the latter. In both cases, serials were not recorded onto a data base at that time. The EB data base starts at around circa 1986-87. To date your Bass the neck will have to be removed to view the dates on both the neck heel and in the body pocket. I strongly suggest you have a luthier do this for you.

If you don't want the neck removed then you'll have to determine whether your Bass is a Pre-EB or an EB.

EB is post 1984.

The quickest way to tell the difference between the two is to check the position of the string retainer and to also count the fret board dot markers past the 12th fret. A Pre-EB will have the retainer on the D&G strings and only 3 dot markers past the 12th fret. An Ernie Ball will have the retainer on the A&D strings and 4 markers past the 12th. If "Ernie Ball" appears on the headstock logo then that will obviously settle the issue (some of the early EBs don't have that on the logo).

If your Bass is an EB, which I think it is, then my guess is that B023700 is from 1986 (based on a comparison of serials from that era). As yet, I haven't seen a B023xxx serial go as far as 700 on a Pre-EB Bass.

Thanks for your help.
Ernie Ball is on the headstock logo. From the informations I gathered from your site (logo layout, pre-EB bridge on an EB bass) I believe it was created in '85 or '86 but I wasn't sure.
All Stingrays have the date stamped on the neck heel and the body pocket?

77 Inca Silver Stingray

Just wanted to say hello & show my Stingray.

S/n is B004843.
Neck date: June 16th 1977
Body date: July 14th 1977
Pot date 7728

I bought it new on New Years Eve '77.
Was a good way to start '78.

Two questions:

Does anybody know how many silver Stingrays were made?

Mine has very narrow & short frets. Did they normally come that way?

Thanks

Vintage,

Gav could probably tell you about the number of Incas in the pre-MM days. My guess is not many. Regarding the frets, it seems they experimented a bit in the early days then settled in the wider frets similar to what we use now.

Thanks for the info.

That would have been a great way to celebrate the New year! :D

I don't know the numbers but Inca Silvers are relatively rare. I haven't done a count but my list (in the hundreds) only contains about 5 or 6. They also appear to be restricted to 1977-79 inclusive.

Re frets. All I can say is that my 1979 Ray (purchased new) has the same frets as yours. I've never recorded any info on them. Oddly enough, the frets on my Bass were described as "Jumbo" (advert material at the time).
