Newbie needs some advice on a Sterling

I've been looking for a good deal on a 'Ray as I miss the one I bought and then sold because I'm an idiot. Anyway, was at GC today and they had a blowout deal on a Sterling in desert gold (discontinued color). Never really played a Sterling before - but the neck on it felt great.

Two quick questions 1) do sterlings hold their value as well as 'Rays - will the loud color hurt the saleability (if I ever decide to sell) 2) the neck on the back felt very "worn" almost had a used feel to it - is that how it is made or has it worn from being played in the store?

I do not claim to be an expert, but I have a Sterling or two lying about. All I can say is BUY IT!

Now that we got that out of the way, the bright orange may be Desert Gold.

And it has not been discontinued, at least I hope not. It's a great color!

In my opinion, a used Sterling is every bit as valuable as a used 'Ray. I suggest you check the "basses for sale" thread for examples.

The color should not effect the resale at all. Even ugly old Heinz has it's admirers. Myself included!

I don't think the neck was worn. all of my Sterling basses have a satin type finish on the back of the neck. Until you reach the headstock and it becomes glossy.

if not,go to the sticky marked "what color is this?"up near the top.look under solid finishes.they're all there

i wouldnt bother thinking too hard on resale value.if you like the finish someone else will too.otherwise get black or sunburst,which have always been popular

when you say the neck was worn,did you just mean you could feel the wood(fner fner).could have just been dry and needing some simple maintenance.the majority of musicman basses and guitars are unlaquered maple like this and if you look after them reguarly they feel like some velvet addiction and play like nothing else on earth

Its definitely the color Ritchie posted. Man you guys are GOOD! yeah I've walked passed it several times in the store - they keep trying to get rid of it. I keep ignoring it because I want a stingray. But I decided to play it today because the clearance price is within my budget - and it plays great and sounds better than the Rays they had. The only thing is I don't like the color.

as far as the color thing goes... i doubt it matters. if the price of the sterling is as great as some of the GC clearance prices ive seen you should be able to sell it for more than u buy it for

Don't know about that. I see the sterlings go for about $100 to $150 less than comparable Stingrays on the bay. Sterlings are really popular amongst us Forumites, but the rest of the world doesn't seem to know about them. Good for us, though.

well then i stand corrected. i dont keep too much of an eye on ebay etc... i check maybe once a month for a couple minutes. oops, my bad

used Sterlings have pretty much always fetched a little less than a comparable condition Ray.it was the same deal with the sabre way back.

Buy it..... The Sterling is "THE" EB/MM bass as far as I'm concerned. Feels right, tonal options (I loves the switch), what more can you ask?
