Ok, I know I am going to invoke the wrath of some of you out there, but here I go anyway...

I recently purchased a fretless S.U.B. Stingray from fellow forumite NoFrets80.

I had tossed around a few ideas to my pal Roy at RS Guitarworks for a custom paint job.

At first I wanted a Tom Peterson type checkerboard. But, Roy didn't want to do it. Way too complicated.

So, we took two things I like and put them together. Checker Cabs and EBMM basses. And the idea for a Checker Cab finish was born. I heisted a pic from someone here on the forum (Sorry about that :) ) and using my primitive editing skills, I came up with this.

So, what do you think? If all goes well, it should be finished in a couple of months..

Hey Ritchie,

Great idea and certainly something different. I wonder what the original owner thinks? Out of interest, how much would a refinish like that cost?

I'm really attracted to this kind of customisation. Stock finishes are wonderful, but custom work really personalises an instrument. I've noticed a bit of a trend lately with some manufacturers dressing up instruments with Henna tatoo-like imagery on the front of the body, making WW2 aircraft-type finishes or in the case of one hollow body bass making the whole thing look Yellow Cab-ish.

Aussie Mark recently posted a link to a Stingray 4 on ebay which had its entire body repainted with a Geiger-like alien image. I'm not a Geiger fan, but I thought it looked stunning.

In the 80's, Dave Allen, the Stingray-toting bass player for English tribal funk outfit "Shriekback" had a Stingray painted with a Roy Lichtenstein-esque PopArt "POW!" on it - I can't remember if it was the full Lichtenstein F-86 Sabre jet shooting down a MiG "POW!" image, but it definitely had the word "POW" painted on it in an explosion. Paul Weller did the same thing with one of his Rickenbacker 330 guitars - looked awesome.

I hope we see more of that kind of work. Personally, I would love to find an artist who could/would do that kind of job...

Good luck with the project.

Can't wait to see it.

Cheers

Andy

What the hey, Ritchie --it's your guitar, and having a one-of-a kind finish that makes your wildest dreams come true would be cool. GO for it.

I have thought before of having a sign shop do a vinyl overlay for a guitar (in sort of an austin powers jaguar union jack theme). Pretty much a big sticker that could be peeled off if I eventually realized it was a bad idea. Plus if I liked it getting more done would be cheaper because it would already be set-up.

I've had it done for race cars before, and you'd have to think a guitar would be cheaper. Any thoughts on this approach?

My dream Stingray is a 2-band banana yellow with a black guard and maple board. Not subtle!

Your plans look great to me. :D Then again, I think the Dean Psycho Cabbie guitars and basses look kind of cool, too.

Knock yourself out. I think it'll look great with the black SUB neck, too.

Some would cringe at the idea of changing from stock one of the few SUB fretlesses, but who cares what those people think? :D

You house appears to share a common trait with a roach motel, too--As in, "Basses check in, but they don't check out." So, it's not like it would be going anywhere anytime soon, anyway... Do it.

Do it...

Personally I think I would put the front-side checkers on the other diagonal, but it's your design and it looks good all the same.

We talked about that as well....... And also about having it run straight down the middle from the neck to the bridge.....I definitely want the Checker Cab logo where it is. So, it might mean interrupting the checker pattern.....but nothing is set yet... I might get the white and just keep it... hehehe

Yeah! I'd like that in a Sterling....but with a white pearloid pickguard and white pickup cover......Maple board and matching headstock.....
