It just seems strange (to me) to put flats on a Stingray. It's like the only great bass that is supposed to have rounds on it. Jazz or Precision, flats no problem.

I'm contemplating the same exact thing.
I have an abnormal fear of flats though.
Gauge would be personal preference. A difference in string tension would potentially impact your current set-up - nothing a simple tweak of the wheel wouldn't fix.
