There have has some quality, on topic posts and commentary and there has been the off-topic, thread de-railing side discussions and there has been the other stuff I don't have a name for.
We're all guilty of it at times - just not in such concentrated doses.
It's not about "not liking you"...
Plenty of us have provided commentary, some direct, some veiled, some with sarcasam - think about it a bit, adjust, and you'll do just fine here.
And bottom line, thick skin helps too...

All right. I'm new and not trying to muscle around here BUT at the same time this is one of the more major hijacking's I've (not) participated in. Plus as Sterling pointed out I do HR part of the time (I'm mostly an accounting person) and it's been a trying day here at work. Here's what I think. Which I believe I'm entitled to state since I started the freaking thread.
1) This is a thread about a stupid $12.95 street sign.
2) But someone was irritated about a frequent poster and got fed up on this thread -- fine. I can understand that. There isn't a forum for it and it was one too many times for him.
3) So he pointed that out to said frequent poster
4) Who took great umbrage and
5) Went into a snit and
6) Is now enumerating his finer qualities, experience and skills in the thread. Originally about a $12.95 street sign.
7) And everyone's now piling on with their opinion
8) Please hear me out
Normally I wouldn't go off like this but in the interests of "why can't we all just get along" I'd like to point out the following:
1) This is a thread about a stupid $12.95 street sign
2) It should never have gotten so long
3) Especially because it's been derailed so far that it's in another state
4) At this point the general population probably doesn't care about the street sign or the posting controversy
5) The message is not that you should go away, saxnbass. If you asssume that then you are engaged in the Fallacy of Grandiosity. People are just telling you to back off. It's good advice here, and in life. Stay with me.
6) I think after 46 years on this planet I am entitled to say that. Don't take it as me saying I'm bettter, more skilled or more talented than you -- that's still the Fallacy of Grandiosity. I'm simply suggesting that this is an area where I've got a lot of experience and you might be able to use my frequent and pitiable mistakes to avoid some pitfalls.
7) Most importantly, in this virtual world what matters, and all that matters, is that you follow the rules and customs of the board where you're posting. The whole point of interest-specific forums is to find a place you fit in. Not a place that fits you. Maybe this isn't quite the right place for you, I don't know. I do know that for me, you and everyone who posts on message boards, self-censorship is essential.
I am not particularly annoyed by people who post > average. On the other hand, saxnbass, it appears that many others are. And regardless of your quoted statistics and averages, you post quite a bit. You are a constant presence in threads here. That fact, plus being asked to back off, would lead me to see what I could do to alter my behavior. FYI, I've seen this same controversy on other boards as well, and the heat you're getting is mild by comparison.
As the new kid in town, regardless of my considerable skills in several areas, and numerous jobs, I try to keep a lid on it until I understand the culture and mores of the board. And figure out what I can do to contribute. By that time I have lulled everyone into a false sense of security and they're generally inclined to put up with my quirks.
I would request that you do me the courtesy of not taking offense at anything I've said. This post is meant in a cooperative spirit of keeping you around while both of us learn how to fit into the community that is this message board.

Coincidentally, I'm another 46yo (almost, in September) HR person, but I'm from the "bad cop" HR side (labour relations, organisation design and risk management) rather than the tree hugging variety. Sometimes I think I chose the wrong career path, but it's been an interesting 27 year roller coaster ride so far. No two days have ever been the same, and I could write a book about situations I've been embroiled in over the years.
Does this count as a separate thread hijack to the original one, or is there a limit of one hijack per thread?

No, it's actually an interesting and additive contribution, Mark. Plus I've wondered about the your job and not been quite clear on it.
[What follows is a complete and total hijack of my own already-hijacked thread. And it involves the Human Resources aspect of my job, which almost all of you will want to skip over.]
I'm the HR person at my job because (a) we need one and (b) I know the most about it -- which, by the way, isn't all that much. But mostly I'm the HR person because (c) no one else wants to do it. Around this company it's often like herding cats. My primary job is Controller and CFO, responsible for accuracy of our financial records, maintaining our financial position and financial planning and forecasting.
The HR side of my job is partly to be sure we're compliant with the laws and protected from lawsuits and penalties. That's the less rewarding part. The good part is that it's my responsibility to be sure that we have the benefits to keep our employees around for a while. We've been lucky to have a superlative group of people both in the field and in the office (we're a residential construction company). That part of HR helps keep people safe and happy and has a direct impact in my area of major responsibility, financial management. Turnover is expensive. Stability is good if you have a good crew.
The bad side of HR is making people tow the line in areas they really don't care about. I need to be 100% available to help people and they have to feel comfortable coming to me. At the same time I have to be tough about basic expectations -- like filling out timecards accurately, responding to memos, etc.
Today a young employee said something about the 401(k) (retirement plan) that showed he gets it and is interested in it. That has been the most challenging part of the job lately because there's a fairly stringent education requirement. Getting everyone rounded up and properly informed ain't easy. And getting people to care about things 20 to 50 years in their future is even more difficult. We have 100% participation and I am (not so) quietly proud.
That puts me mostly on the treehugger side, but the employees have job requirements that are Pre 1A. Some things are not negotiable and there are penalties for screwing up. I think coming from a practical background, rather than a formal HR background, gives me advantages in working with my co-workers as an HR person. I think it's going well so far. Or maybe they're just a little wary of the pre-menopausal psycho in the upstairs office.
P.S. I'll be 47 before you hit 46.

Saxnbass...One try at a concept that may help...Pretend that you stumbled onto a party (do Eagle scouts stumble?) Everybody looks fun and like your kind of people. you have a bunch of choices but the two obvious ones are:
1.Ease your way in to the group....answer questions that you have expertise in , dont answer questions that were directed to others and just get used to the waters.
