I posted a similar question on TB, but I figured I would post my question here as well....

I have a Bongo5 that I really wasn't playing much as the low B string sounded like crap when practicing by myself.

I brought it to band rehersal recently as my new band plays a lot of drop D stuff. WOW! WOW! WOW! What an amazing difference when a 5er is played in a band mix!:D

Why does it sound so good with a band and so crappy when playing alone?

My opinion on this is....you have others around you and you get set into the groove of the music which makes things more interesting. You don't concentrate so much on just the bass and sound (playing by yourself) as you do when you have other instruments going that helps set the pace. You become more interested in the fit and sound to compliment the song.

I hate practicing by myself on bass....just doesn't do it for me. Put me in my band setting, I will play all day and night. I still practice by myself as you should, but it sure is more fun and interesting in the band room.

I used to use my SR5 for mostly quiet church gigs but when I joined a funky four-piece band, the bass came to life. I'm falling in love with this baby!!

Koogs nailed it in every respect. Playing in a band setting is nothing like playing alone, especially tone-wise. You really need to EQ your bass differently in a band setting.

And playing with yourself is no fun.

Wait a minute...did I really say that? :D

How loudly do you play when you play alone in the basement? I've found that my cabs really get farty when I don't push enough watts into them. At low volume, it sounds like my cabs can't handle a low B. But, when I turn up the juice, it sounds full and tight.

I make living on B string it makes easier physically to go B string note from higher note on other strings than go down the neck to hit the same note on E string :D

You are a friggin' genius!!!!!;) :D THAT'S IT!!!!!

I can't turn my Ampeg rig past 1 (out of 10 master volume) or I tend to break thing upstairs. I ALWAYS play really quietly.

Thanks bassmonkee. Now I will be able to sleep at night.:p :D

Hey genius, if the universe is constantly expanding, why can’t I ever find a parking space?

Even a genius knows when to refer a question to an expert:

Dear Dr Science,

Why does somebody always reach the best parking space just before I do?

It's the same person who's in front of you in line at the grocery store, the one slowly writing a check and balancing their checkbook. And the same one who brings a full grocery cart into the express lane. This individual is your very own personal nemesis, a spiritual entity created at the moment of your conception, whose only job is to prove to you that life is suffering. Lest you be persuaded otherwise, this being will dog your every step and rain on your every parade. If you examine your wedding photos carefully, he'll be in the background, giving you an obscene hand gesture and laughing at your attempts at finding a lifemate. For many in the scientific community, I am that person.

So, is my expanding waistline Nature's way of keeping me from seeing my shoes?

What's keeping you from seeing your shoes is membership in the Dickie-Do club. That's when your stomach sticks out more than your dickie do. :p
