They're both great guitars.
I personally have and like the regular Silo. It's got a more modern sound and has a full 24 frets whereas the Silhouette Special hass 22 and is more vintage sounding.
The regular Silo has more quack if you prefer.
I love positions 4 and 2. They sound amazing!
Not sure I'd agree that the SS has a vintage sound, it's a bit raunchier than a Strat, especially with the HSS configuration. I like it for it's compact shape and lightness, but I wish it had slightly less harsh pickups.
I've mostly played mine through a GT5 into the PA, but now I'm using it through valve amps and it wouldn't be my first choice for "vintage" tones.
For me there's no choice between the two, as there aren't any left handed Silhouettes.
All depends what kind of music you want to play with it.
Yes, I was thinking the reg silo would be better for me, I have an HSS strat and would like a different option. Plus I have big hands and I think the HSH silo has a slightly bigger neck(correct me if I'm wrong). The only EBMM guitar I have played is the petrucci and I liked it alot
Well the band I'm playing in now is more modern melodic rock, but I play alot of stuff. I like to think i'm Steve Morse,Andy Summers and Eric Claptons love child but im dreaming
I love the Silo Spec... but truthfully, I have never played a Silo before. I don't typically play near the 22nd fret, so the extra two frets aren't a big deal for me.
both have the exact same neck size. not sure i agree that the silo is more modern souding, define modern sounding?? Sure the silo special has a more stratty single coil tone, but the fact that the regular silo has a humbucker in the neck doesnt make it more modern. both are fabulous however, but i would bet a HSS silo special would be right up your alley, especially in delivering authentic single coil and humbucker tones.
I had a silo with a floyd and I use a silo special as my main guitar, I like the special becuase I like the single coil tone in the neck and I have a bucker in the bridge, I think Foggys statement refers more to the stock pups in the 2 guitars, but if you like you can turn the silo special into a hard rockin instrument with a bucker change and then go to the singel coil in the neck and get a good strat sound, so thats my take, if you wanna hear what it can do I could send you some MP3's, youll be suprised at how versatile the guitar can be, plus the neck kills the strat neck, the strat will feel like s#*t against the special and it stays in tune to boot under trem use, how can you beat that?
Hi Mr Tim. Everything that's been said here is good. You need to define what you want the guitar to do for you.
If you want more traditional sounds, then something like a SSS would be your mbest bet. But if you wanted more modern stuff, then a SSH, or a HSH might be more suited.
Either way, the Silo should be a good choice for you.
Hey Tim! Welcome to your "other home". Everyone has said things that should make you wanna go wrap your hands around one right now! As a diehard 24 fret hardtail Silo lover who is really particular about clean tones as well as heavy tones, the standard offers anything you could possibly desire sonically. If you're more of a 22 fret guy, the Sil Special is just as capable of delivering a wealthspring of tones. The 10" radius neck is a dream to play on either one. I'd say if you have an idea about what you'd like to hear from a guitar, it really comes down to your pickup config. I would highly suggest trying out both the standard (H/S/H) and the Special (S/S/H) and then deciding what works best for what you want to hear. You're gonna love how the guitar feels and that's half the battle won !
There's nothing I don't like about the stock Sil Special HSS, but I've never played a HSH Silo. I chose the Special because A) I liked the looks better B) I wanted a single pup at the neck C) I'm too lame to play above 22 frets D) The price was right. I was skeptical as hell about the bucker in the bridge, being a single coil guy, but it was like having my birthday fall on Christmas.
I've said it before, the HSS Silo Special is the Swiss Army knife of guitars. Given the difference in tone from a maple to a rosewood board, having one of each gives amazing versatility.
Is it a Strat? No. Is it Tele? No. A Paul? Nope. Who cares? It is its own beautiful beast.
I dunno about anyone else, but I like the idea that these axes aren't hanging in every shop window. I have a 'tude about mainstream anything. How many times a month are you gigging guitarists hearing "I didn't know EB makes guitars!"? Maybe that's all changing, but I'm not so sure that this isn't by design, to stay a bit underground.
