Big Poppa, I was curious as to what amps you have for in-house testing. Are these the same models you gig w/? Do you get on w/ modeling/solid state amps like Line-6 etc... or are you an all-tube afficianado?

OH Man....

First of you cant not try the stuff through Marshall's and Boogies. We also try them Through Krank, Engl,Thd, Used to use Cornford....MY personal choice is almost always either brown face or black face fenders. I think that the bF Deluxe reverb is neear perfect and I have a bunch on them. I have a fairly good collection of vintage amps.

I love what the whole modeling stuff has done but I dont use them I also am a very wierd guitarist in that I dont use delay.

Some nice sounding amps in there BP.

The two brands we have at Machinehead that are causing the most excitement are

Two-Rock and Divided By 13.

You have to refinance your house to buy one but they have TONE!

Never been a Marshall guy myself---never tried a combo that sat right w/ me out of the ones I did check out.

I was looking at the Hughes and Kettner Switchblade but I'm not certain on their reliability track record yet and need to research more on the interplay between tube/digital in one package.

I'll have to check out some newer Fender amps. Cleans should be remarkable and w/ a preamp/pedal distortion should not be a problem (should articulate the notes)

I havent found a new fender that came close. I used to say the same about Marshalls but I really like it when you get a good one. I also think that you should get a nice tube amp and then have your effects be trendy and current. You arent stuck with a hybrid digital dinosaur when better effects come out.

That makes sense BP. What would you recommend I try as far as today's tube amps go? Is there anything out there w/in a resonable budget that shines? By resonable I'm figuring less than $2,000.

That's a good bit of advice, BP. I'm currently amp shopping and I like what you're saying.

If it's the new 4 channel JVM Marshall, I thought it sounded great. Very warm and plenty of gain. I still like the Diezel amps the best, but those puppies are like five G's, which is just crazy money.

I like the marshall combo with the three channels I havent played the four channel one yet.

I dont know what size gigs you play or what your intended use is. I would go with your guitar and effects and try as many as you could in the store. I would then try to use it in action on a gig....

I've always loved the Marshall 50's. and I totally agree with you BP insofar as I run my POD xt (effects) through the power stage of the amp (thereby cutting out the pre amp).

The only time I'd change my Marshall now is to "pension it off" and get a lighter one !!

Cool what about those ex marshall guys?

Blackstar products will be making their debut in the 2nd half of this year.

Can you guess which UK based guitar store will be the first?

We met up with the guys in Frankfurt and heard their hand wired combo and valve driven pedals. We were mightily impressed. They are being constructed overseas but those guys have the experience and track record to deliver.

Watch this space and I'll give you more details over the coming weeks.

I went to the Marshall launch of the Vintage Modern and JVM amps. I was far more impressed by the VM. To me it seems most amp companies are going for more "straightforward" designs - and the JVM was a multi channel, multi option behemoth. Even the H & K Switchblade (which is a great gigging amp for someone in a covers band for example) has a very easy to use and understand front end. I think the JVM seems voiced for the modern rock and metal player - and dont get me wrong it has some good high gain tones but in that field I'd go for a Krank or Engl over it anyday.

...or more likely wait for a Blackstar series one :)

We have sold loads of Switchblades (we are the UK's biggest H&K dealer) - the only reliability problems we have had have been tubes on 2 amps (though H&K now burn all the tube in and test them before shipping) and the cable on the footswitch (which is now replaced with one of better spec).

Not been much of a Marshall fan in the last decade or two, but I was at GC and played a 1974x 1x12 18w combo - holy smokes! Did that thing ever sound good! Now, selling internal organs to be able to buy a 1x12 combo is more than I am willing to pay......
