Sorry for derailing the thread (although still on topic). When I ordered my fretless Bongo, I asked for flats installed and the dealer sent me the bass as requested. I thought that EBMM honored my request, but Big Poppa has said that all EBMM basses come with rounds installed. Can you tell from the pictures (from the blue wraps, I think) if those are Ernie Ball flats?

I've never heard of someone not being able to tell if a string was flatwound or not. All of the people who play my bass just complain about it! :D Welcome to the Flatwound Club!

EB flats are THE BEST!
I've had them on a StingRay, my Bongo ,and,...ahem, ..well, another bass as well.
They are very "musical" for a flat, and the tension is right, (for me). There's another well known flat wound string that can't say that. "Floppy"

You've misread my question. I'm asking whether the EB flats are steel or nickel. I've played steel flats, i.e. Fender, D'Addario and prefer the nickel.

I've never tried EB flats and wonder if they are steel or nickel flats.

Seems like a simple enough question, but apparently it's a secret or something, though one guys above thinks they are a nickel/tin alloy. But that is as yet unconfirmed.

I think I know what brand, rhymes with GI Hats, that you're talking about.

Yes, O wise one.
Those are fine strings for those who like the feel of floppiness, and I harbor them no ill will. But in my world of bar band frenzy and loud volume rock and roll mania, I must have a string I can play, not one that wallows around on the fretboard.

My apologies to those floppy string players, I just got back from my weekly shock treatments and I'm having a moment of clarity, along with a glass of Petron.

But I have no idea of the metal makeup of these fine strings.

Just put them on, (your bass)

You'll thank me later.

Don't quote me on this, because I think they feel a lot like nickel, but I'm pretty sure they USED to be stainless steel.

Whether they still are, wait till the morning when Dargie/Brian/Derek/Jon check in or if BP is around later.

Nay sir! I was talking about Alvabass and the pictures he posted. You can still be a Flatwounder even if you don't know what you're playing though, don't worry :p

Trust me, Alva knew they were flats.

He just wasn't sure of the brand.

You're kidding, right? He knew they were flats--he just didn't know the brand. He's not the one looking silly right now....
