Well, my HS bass doesn't have any hidden pickups:

Nice bass Will.....

I seem to remember someone saying its only the Stingray4 HS that has them... I could be wrong and am ready to accept that...

Wait wait...everyone on this thread seems to know what's going on, but could someone spell it out for me. Is this video for real? There's a hidden PU beneath the HS Stingrays for the hum-cancelling?

If so, why is it just for the Stingrays and not the HS Bongos and Sterlings?

Just wondering....

If you have got a Stringray HS have a look.....;)

I don't...which is why I'm asking....hoping that someone from EB/MM will clear it up.

If it's hidden down into the body under the pickguard, then I guess it doesn't actually do any picking up of the strings and just acts as the hum-canceling and does this make the neck PU a true single coil...only that it doesn't "hum"?

Also, how does the SR5 20th anniversary get away with it? Is the hidden PU under the wood? And again, why is this only for the Stingray HS and not the Bongo or Sterling HS?

Very interesting.

I have just been trying the search functions to find the thread. That bass has been posted here before...and someone (Jon I think) posted a reply saying why.
I seem to remember it is there to cancel the hum....

help.....

It's the MM phantom coil. It's discussed in the bass FAQ on the main EB site.

Q: What does the 3 way switch do on the Stingray 5 and the Sterling?

A: With the switch in the 'closest to neck' position, the pickup's flow of voltage follows a snake like pattern around the poles, this is called the Series position, creating an out of phase slightly brighter humbucker tone. The second position is the Single Coil position, only the coil closest to the bridge is used creating a thin, bright sound for soloing, a phantom coil is added to reduce single coil noise. The last position is the Parallel position, use this for the traditional thick bottom end bass sound made famous by the Stingray 4.

So...there IS a PU under the surface that's the "phantom coil"? Also, that question and answer you quote is only for the SR5 and the Sterling...but I assume it's the same function on the newer SR4 H/S, right?

Thanks.

The phantom coil on the SR5 and Sterling is on the single pickup models and is part of the pickup.

bahaha, you fail! No beating-a-dead-horse for you! You must now answer the question of the original poster!

Actually, don't bother...as I've already lost interest.

I couldn't find the subject either on a search - I suspect it's been deleted.

Anyway, I was wondering if anybody had ever attempted to reverse the whole thing - so that the neck pickup was submerged and the dummy coil was up - sort of like a super H stingray, but keeping all the space next to the fingerboard, and having a variety of tonal options. Or just swapping the pickup with the dummy coil if indeed the dummy coil is not "voiced" for playing.
